Dally M Changes

In my view they didn't go far enough with these changes. The main ones I would have made would be-

1. Positional awards always won by the player with the highest vote tally (rather than only if they make the top 10). Last year we had a fullback of the year who was outvoted by 5 other fullbacks.
2. Every player who takes the field should be rated out of 10, rather than onlyt the three best players receiving points.
3. The team of the year should include two wingers, centres, front rowers and second rowers. It is ludicrous that some players have double the chance of making a team of the year than others, depending on the position they play. I would not object to the team of the year having a bench, made up of players who mostly played off the bench.
4. When displaying the top 10, it should include players who tied for 10th place. (which it didn't last year)
5. The voting up to round 14 should be posted on the NRL site, rather than behind a paywall as in previous years.

Good move to have the voting only by former players. Some career journos seem to have no idea and the print media seem more prone to putting forward certain agendas and promoting certain players.

Problems is (iirc) the "Dally M" award is owned by the Daily Telegraph and not the NRL. Hence I doubt it will go on the NRL's website as a result (and yes, I rather see it run by the NRL with no involvement from New Ltd).

They are headin in the right direction atleast. A panel of current players rather than bums that just write fake news articles all day is a lot more accurate

positional awards shouldn't coincide with dally ms because was Tedesco really the 6th best fullback in the comp. No. If he wasn't injured for 8 games or however many he would've been around that top 5 for dally m guarentee

They should be based off avg stats.

Off average stats? Not a good idea I'm afraid. Could you imagine if a 1 game wonder won an award based on those criteria over a player who had busted their arse all year? That is what could happen if you went off average stats. Further stats don't tell the whole story. You can have players who on paper have killer stats (e.g. run metres, tackles made) but most of those tackles were as part of a gang tackle, or hit ups late in the game when the result was all but known.

Have a minimum requirement amount of games played then to solve that. If injury cruels you and don't meet the standard, bad luck

In tedescos case he played 17 or so nrl games but his avg tackle busts, metres gained, tries scored etc were far better than any other fullback iirc

2. Every player who takes the field should be rated out of 10, rather than onlyt the three best players receiving points.

This isn't a bad idea provided they spread the scores enough i.e. an average performance gets 5 and a great performance gets 8,9 or 10. With the RLW they tend to give most at least 6 or 7 and stand outs an 8 maybe 9 if really good. Not enough of a spread.

Maybe all the judges should judge all of the games as well. At present 8 different judges each game of the round.

The Frog is right.

Considering that these are the premium awards for the NRL, the Dally M set up is simply not good enough. Most important change has to be, as Frog said, ALL players get ranked out of 10.

One easy fix.

f**k it off and the NRL take back control of it's awards ceremony.

Whilst we are at it do the same with the Immortals concept.

the main awards now are the Player Association Awards. Nobody cares about the News Ltd's.

In terms of prestige? Maybe. However the Dally M's are now recognised (for better or worse) as being the official awards of the NRL. The NRL are involved in it and support it. They don't give any recognition to the NRLPA Awards.

I'd like to see them add a defensive player of the year award.

6th man of the year as well

In all seriousness though I think there something to be had by pinching the NBA's 'all NRL' team maybe not to third team as it could start getting a bit thin but a first and second team would be interesting.
