Darius Boyd's return

Cant help but feel that this has been glossed over by a lot of bronco supporters on this forum.

I couldn't have asked for a better signing to finally put an end to the troubles we've had with the fullback position. His form before he left us & the form he had at the dragons was great. Darius obviously comes with some baggage and his Newcastle form is nothing to be excited about. I think he's an emotional player and needs to really believe in what he's doing and who he's playing for, unfortunately for Newcastle it wasn't them.

Of all our signings this year, I think Boyd will provide the most value.

Boyd will go very, very well for Brisbane. He never wanted to be in Newcastle, at least judging by his showings on the field. Even at his worst he's still a safe pair of hands and was one of the most important blokes in our team until he went totally off the rails.

He's a world class player, anyone that doubts it hasn't had him in their team. As much as the bloke shitted me up the wall by the end - it was mainly because I knew how good he can be. To watch him waste it and take our cash was very frustrating.

Perfect response, mate. Boyd is a very good player, and the frustrating part is watching a player with extreme talent mope around like a nonse.

Could the same be said of his step-dad?

He's exactly what we've been needing in a fullback in the last few years - safe at the back and can ball play. I just hope he is fired up for next year. He can genuinely score length of the field tries but rarely takes the kick return.

I'm very pleased with Boyd's return. Hopefully being back in queensland brings out the best in him

Let's be honest ... we played most of the 2014 without a true fullback. Barba gave us no extra man plays and was completely lazy and uncommitted. Hoffman tried hard but stifled play more than created it.

Boyd brings the full package - speed, ball-playing (although limited), and even a kicking game (again limited, but at least an option). He is also big enough not to be monstered like Barba was consistently.

What I like about our spine next year, is youth. If we can keep this spine together for four or five years, I am 100% positive there will be at least one premiership coming our way.

We can only assume. Doubt if the Broncos would have coughed up $400,000 otherwise.

We can only assume. They coughed up a mottza for Barba & Kennedy last year and they didn't go any good. I hope this is not the same type of assumption.

Yeah, I agree with this. We seem to have a monopoly on the young talent with the most potential. Milford, Hunt, Oates, Copley, Kahu the list goes on.

I am talking in terms of Boyd's recovery. If the club weren't satisfied he was sufficiently recovered, then they would not have agreed to terms.

If he was still in depression and showing no signs of getting better, then the club obviously would not have signed him.

Barba and Kennedy were not established Origin and Test players. Kennedy couldn't make first grade for the Roosters, and Barba had a terrible season in 2013, but the club still paid huge money for them. I've written enough about this ... Griffin had no idea about putting a first grade rugby league team together and that is why Bennett has had to make drastic changes to right the ship.

does anyone else think the whole depression thing was just a way of getting out of the end of a horror season and going away to start at a new club next year?

he may very well of been suffering from depression but at the time I just thought "oh yeah, sure".. he never really lit Newcastle alight with some of the footy he is capable of, I don't think his heart was ever in it

You can,t blame Griffin about the players at his disposal. (Aka, the signing of Barba & Kennedy) I have been told by a knowledgeable person that the signings are done by the Recruitment Officer.
He could only dance with the ones he brung.
P.S. Gavet & Garbutt are only reserve graders too.

They are also not big money marquee signings.

They are reporting Garbutt is on 250k a season for three years. Pretty good money for a 25 year old who hasn't, played a dozen first grade games. Bet that's more then Hannant is getting at the Cowboys.

Thanks for verballing me Guru. At no time did I ever suggest that the recruitment officer is solely responsible for the signings. I said that they were done in tandem between Bennett and Peter Nolan.

And in addition, I believe Peter Nolan only came to the club last year, and therefore it would have been Andrew Gee who did the deals with Barba and Kennedy.

Andrew Gee leaving his dual role has been the best thing to happen for the club for some time.

Exactly Snappy. Gavet and Garbutt are both "potential" signings - both have great potential and Bennett is the man to help them realise that potential.

Mate ... just admit that your argument is flawed and leave it there gracefully.

What's flawed about it. According to you blokes everyone they sign is a potential world beater and everyone they got rid of was hopeless.
If Bennett is such a great developer of players, what went wrong at the Knights.

Garbutt has a bit of the Shane Troncs about him.
