Wasn't the cafe you speak of actually called "Sterlo's Lounge" and is now where "Sterlo's Sports Bar" is? The cafe was making no money and the members wanted somewhere to play a game of pool so they turned the lounge into a sports bar. No additional pokies there from what I can remember.

It’s pretty easy to avoid the pokies.
Just walk in turn left and go up the escalator.
Up there you will find a sports bar, a bistro, a Chinese restaurant and if you go up another level there will be a cantina-style restaurant and brewery plus a bowling alley and arcade.

I’m sure you can get a snack and a coffee in there somewhere.
