I very highly doubt that Smith will actually play. I think he's just being bought in just in case another back gets injured. So De Vere, Sing and Lewis will still be ahead of him on the pecking order.

If that doesnt happen I'll give it away, I mean didnt Anderson see that Senior and Sculthorpe kept targeting Bailey in the centres, what makes him think that a 34-year is gonna be better?

What about Lewis, what about Sing, what about DeVere?

I mean he did this Wagon in the last tour, surley this is his last time as Aussie coach.

I wont be suprised if Australia loses this test, but it will still create a bit of interest, to make the 3rd a decider.

One other thing Anderson should do but wont do it, is replace Mason with Joel Clinton.

What the hell does he need another centre for when he has Michael DeVere and Luke Lewis in the Kangaroos squad?

i think we lacked experience badly in the backs during the test. Whilst Devere and Lewis are top players, if memory serves, neither has played in a test match

they gotta start somewere and there both good enough to be playing in the team

Is it a possibility that De Vere is being frozen out after coming so close to signing with the Sharks, then finally turning his back on Anderson and Cronulla?

I didnt mean to pinch this theory off other people, I only just saw it in another thread. So looks like we're all on the same wavelength!

It would be great for Easts and the Qld Cup if Smith plays, especially if it is well mentioned that he is with the mighty Tigers next year. As for who was the last to play for Australia from the Brisbane comp. I don't think any have since the Broncos entered in 1988. So have a look at the 1987 team that played NZ and there'd be a few in there, Alfie, Lewis, Backo maybe. I don't remember, it was before my time, but this is probably the last year any BRL player would have played for the roos.

How long has it been since someone was picked having played their last football in the UK? Even longer I bet.

A hard head with experience is exactly what we need

Besides, Slater, Harris etc etc would not be in training in all likelihood, you chouldn't just ship them across, they'd be out of shape

Oh Please, listen to yourself mate, Darren Smith is friggen Semi-retired, if you want experience in the backs then why doesnt Chris Anderson just play himself on the wing. Darren SMith was too slow to play in the backs at NRL level 3 years ago, whats to suggest he's quick enough to play in the backs at international level now?
And BTW I didn't know that the NZ game didn't qualify as a test match?

He was still playing for an elite team this year, hardly semi-retired. He is a top defender. Shit yeh, he is slow. But our defence sucked balls out wide last Sunday, Bailey was a disgrace and Kimmorley is not a noted tackler. We need someone out there who can be reliable and tackle. And Smith won't let you down, even if he is 34

The point about the NZ test match is noted and i do apologise. Things do slip my mind at times

From the paper today apparently it was 1978 and the player was Rod Morris? I would have thought it was later than that at least???

What?? that's rediculous, about a third of the Roos teams from the early 80s were from the Brisbane comp. and there must have still been a few in 1987 I reckon. Weren't Langer and Lewis in the team that year at least?

Rod Morris might have been the last Tiger to play for Australia, although I think John Lang was in the team around then too.

Marty Bella played for the Tigers and Aus, but not actually from the Tigers of course.

Langer never played for Aus in 1987 - Sterlo was halfback.

Dish head Dowling represented Aus from the Norths Devils in 1987 for the one-off Test against the Kiwis at Lang Park which the Aussies lost BTW. I think Nielbing (Redcliffe) and Geno(Wynnum) were there too I think.

Mate Smith is not even playing for saints next season, Smith is a good tackler but he's a damn pensioner. I mean Daniel WQagon is just as good a defender.

The problem as I see it is that the only other centre in the current Australian team capable of defending against Keith Senior.....and thats the issue! is Girdler...for one he's injured and for two he's a left centre...(as is senior) and of course you can't forget the fact that, who is it that defends on the inside of the right centre?? Kimmorley! He is of course Opes Golden haired boy!
Even though Smith is slow these day surely there can be no argument that as a defensive player he is top notch with a huge amount of experience capable of keeping his head against the talent and experience of Senior.
