NRL Grand Final 2014: Dave Tyrell is the true blue collar hero of the South Sydney Rabbitohs

IT would have been easy for Dave Tyrrell to walk away from rugby league at any moment.

When the glamorous South Sydney Rabbitohs run out for the NRL grand final with Canterbury, Tyrrell will be the workhorse front rower whose own journey mirrors that of the club itself.

He has fought back from rugby league oblivion, he has reinvented himself and he has done it all on near minimum wage for his entire career. Maybe one day his riches will come.

Surrounded by millionaire superstars like Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess, Tyrrell is the honest toiler that took three years to pay off his car as his teammates bought beachside penthouses.

Tyrrell was 19 in the Bunnies’ under 20s side when his career looked over.

He was diagnosed with compartment syndrome in his legs, a painful condition where his muscles swell too big and force constant cramping.

Surgery to cut the sleeve of his calf muscle solved the problem, but ruined his career as a winger.

Immediately he lost two seconds of speed from his 100m sprint time. He’d lost his greatest asset. You could excuse the Rabbitohs if they’d cut him loose, just another 20s kid on the scrapheap.

Tyrrell refused to give up. After a five week recovery he played out the season as a backrower and convinced club owner Russell Crowe that he deserved a NRL contract.

He did it all while waking at 4.30am every day to drive from Mascot to Penrith to start work as an apprentice electrician at 7am and then finish training every night at 8pm.

“He was a speedy winger and he went back and wasn’t that speedy anymore,” Tyrrell’s dad Kevin said.

“With the compartment syndrome he lost roughly two seconds over 100m.

“He reinvented himself to go back into the forwards. He had to change the way he played football, he had to change his body shape and he had to change everything. But that is part of David’s drive and determination to get to where he wants.”

Even after his NRL debut in 2009 it hasn’t been easy. In 2010 he missed most of the season with a severe facial fracture and he still has the steel plate in his head as a lasting memory.

After being awarded the Rabbitohs Colt of the Year award.
And he has lasted more than seven years at South Sydney on a wage barely above the absolute minimum for a first grader.

“Put it this way, he is one of the poorest paid players in the NRL,” Tyrrell said.

“It took him three years to pay off a car. Other boys are out buying homes. He is paying off a car and just trying to live in Sydney.

“I don’t think people realise that it’s not easy for him. This is the consistency of Dave, he keeps plodding along, not complaining and doing what he has to do.

“It’s not an easy life. He’s had his face smashed in, he had a cheekbone fracture and has a steel plate in his head … he has had broken arms and the socket broken out of his shoulder. The list goes on and on and on, but he is a tough boy.

“They dropped him for a couple of games and there was a time he wanted to give football away.

“I rang up one of his coaches and said ‘you need to go have a talk to my boy. He is too good to lose to the game.’

“Everyone has self-doubts don’t they. But he has had a good run this year, it’s been his best one.

“When I talk to Dave I tell him you need to run the ball a bit more. He says I just do what I’m told. If I’m told to run it twice I run it twice.

“He is just a man that does what he is told on the field. He doesn’t try to go out of the system and Michael Maguire likes him for that.”

South Sydney Rabbitohs re-sign Thomas Burgess and Dave Tyrrell

South Sydney Rabbitohs have boosted their forward stocks for the future after re-signing key enforcers Dave Tyrrell and Thomas Burgess.

Tyrrell has inked a new two-year deal that will see him remain at the Rabbitohs through to the end of the 2017 season, while Burgess has penned a one-year contract extension until the end of 2016.

Both are key figures in South Sydney’s forward pack. Tyrrell was the only player to feature in all 27 games for the Rabbitohs in their 2014 premiership-winning campaign, while Burgess has kept improving since joining Souths in 2013 from the Bradford Bulls.

Tyrrell has come through the juniors system at Souths and he was delighted to secure his immediate future with the club.

“I’m really happy to have my contract extended as I love playing for this club with this group of players,” Tyrrell said. “I started at Souths in the under 20s back in 2008 and this extension will take me to ten seasons with the club. That’s something I’m very proud of and we’ll all be working hard to continue to achieve the things we have over recent seasons.”

Burgess echoed Tyrrell’s thoughts, saying he was excited to continue his career at Redfern.

“I’m really excited about signing on for another year with the Rabbitohs,” Burgess said. “I’m really enjoying my time with the club, we’ve got a great set of lads here, and in the end the decision to stay is what I think is best for my career. I want to create more memories at this club and I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead, starting with the game against the Cowboys this Monday night.”

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire was ecstatic to retain two of his key forwards.

“This is great news for us as a club and we’re all very happy to know that Dave and Tom will be with us for an extended period,” Maguire said. “Dave is one of the workhorses of our pack and lays a platform for our team every week without fail. He’s shown over many years that he has what it takes to play consistently in the NRL and his efforts every week are not lost on his team mates, the coaching staff and our members. Tom is improving in his game every week and is proving to be a valuable member of our forward rotation in the middle of the field. Both Dave and Tom are great characters to have around the team and represent us well on and off the field. We’re all very happy to have them on board for the seasons to come and look forward to seeing them grow as players and men in the years to come.”

South Sydney take on the North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night at ANZ Stadium.

Tyrrell reveals six-year pain battle
By Rocco Luca
March 25, 2016

SOUTH Sydney’s unsung hero David Tyrrell has revealed he’s played the past six seasons in agony from chronic tendonitis in both knees.

One of the Rabbitohs’ mainstays – only John Sutton has played more games for the club among the current squad – Tyrrell had surgery on his knees over the summer in a bid to fix the problem.

But the big man who takes on the NRL’s toughest forwards every week still can’t walk up a flight of stairs and struggles to complete training sessions.

“It’s been this way for as long as I can remember: pure agony,” Tyrrell says with a wry grin. “I have chronic tendonitis and have lived with it for six long years.

“The medical staff managed it well and put me on a special training program but they finally decided the time was right to do something over the off season.

“I was able to live with the pain but it finally got to breaking point at the end of last season – it was unbearable during and after games.

“They took the tendons out of both knees and it’s a relief that it’s finally going to be better.

“I was off my feet for two months so I started a fair way behind the boys . . . But I did plenty of hard work and I’m happy to be back playing again and getting through games. It’s still not quite right but I was told it will take some time.

“At least now there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve never been the best of runners and hopefully things will improve now . . . Maybe I’ll even get a little faster [laughs].”

The Brisbane-born 27-year-old never attracts the headlines but his work is greatly appreciated by those around him.

A qualified electrician, Tyrrell is a great role model off the field.

He works in Souths Cares’ Teachers’ Aide program, a charity set up by the Rabbitohs to help kids in the Rabbitohs district.

Think it's important to remember the stories behind the players.
I know from personal experience what it's like to go from a speedy back to a slow forward overnight (well technically months after recovery) from injury as a teenager. It's physically hard but mentally it's a whole different ballgame. Kinda why i have so much respect for dave tyrrell, why i kind of get so defensive over him. The more dave tyrrells we have at the club the better our club will be

Love Tyrrell. Hopefully he's recovered from his injuries. Didn't know he had to go through all of that. Honest toiler and he's the 2010's version of Luke Stuart. Every team needs em and every team's got em. Gotta love the Dave Tyrrells.

Without meaning to he's become one of my favourite players, the kind of guy you have a soft spot for and you know he'd get off his death bed to lace his boots up if asked.

No question he's had some rough times, wasn't aware of compartment issue, but he's a premiership winning forward, can't take that away from him

I do like Tyrrell too.

A couple of years ago he was a player other teams would have wanted.

But imo he's now past it and not 1 club would take him when we tried selling him.

I hope he has a role with the club after he retires.

I love Tyrrell too. He is a club legend imo.

However, as R20 has said he is now past it unfortunatley. This is similar to Ben Lowe when he retired in 2015.

Exactly!
We don't know the full story of players injuries and what's going on in players lives etc.
Who knows Tyrell could bounce back this year, let's hope so.
I'm sure Shadow's mate would have filled him in on all this though!

I still have faith that Tyrrell can bounce back. If not well he's off contract so it wouldn't be the worst idea to move him on. But give him one more year to prove himself.

And besides prop forwards mature with age so as long as he has the legs on him he should be okay. Heard he's added quite a bit of size which would help.

I remember when Dave and Chris Mcqueen came to souths as young skinny outside backs / wingers
Unbeleivably they both transformed there bodies to suit playing hard in the forwards
They both went on to win a Premiership with us in 14
I wish Dave best of luck in any future opportunities , if any bloke deserves a lucky break and good coin he is the one

He's had surgery;he's bulked up--& forwards tend to mature with age!!

So,he may be a revelation in 2017! Let's hope!!
