Fairleigh Not to Be Offered Contract for 2007

Thursday, June 01, 2006 - Newcastle Knights

At the Newcastle Knights monthly Board meeting last night, the issue of 2007 coaching staff was discussed.

The Board reaffirmed the head coaches’ responsibility in selecting his support staff.

Given this, and as a result of recent discussions between incoming head coach, Brian Smith, the Club and Knights Premier League Coach, David Fairleigh, David will not be offered a new contract for 2007.

The club has assured David he has its total support for the remainder of the 2006 season.

Daisy is a champion bloke. I looked after his father while he was dying from cancer. A lovely man. This is a total bs decision and will come back to bite us I guarantee it. The knights board are as hard as a soft serve cone. Too busy overpaying players who are clearly overrated and laying blame at the feet of coaches.

Of course I am not referring to Joey, Bedsy, Carney or Simmo as overrated, but you have to wonder why we cannot recruit top line players outside of these four champions. Yes we are going well, but without Joey we are ordinary.

All the Knights board is doing is supporting their head coach. Smith is entitled to have the support staff he wants.
This would happen in all clubs when they change their head coach - support staff will change as well.

Criticising the board for this is a bit over the top.

I can see your respective points. I just think in light of giving Hagan repeated attempts at success this is too harsh. Yes I agree Smith is entitled to pick his support staff. Anyway Fairleigh may be off to Parra so time will tell if the board are right. I think he may be premier league coach if the Parra forum story is accurate.

His results with the premier league team are way below what I thought they would be, judging by the fact it contains or has contained players like Snowden, Mullen, Tighe, Cooper, Seage, Tolar, Abraham, Salkeld and various other players who have played first grade.

Yep, a bit unfair but hardly surprising. Dave Fairleigh is a top bloke, and someone I've got a lot of time for. He should have been a genuine chance of being our next first grade coach until Brian Smith was appointed. He ticked every box except the one that said "first grade experience" -- it probably counted against him, even if there is only one way to get first grade experience.

He's been a great servant of the club, done some good things and handled himself pretty well. To see such a loyal and dedicated coach leave in this way is disappointing. I find it interesting that finally the club has a shake up and the only two people to go are both coaches. Let's hope this will mean selection changes.
