NRL: Cherry ripe for picking

Daly Cherry-Evans is set to succeed Trent Hodkinson as Manly's half in 2011.
THE coach who oversaw the rise of Manly halfback Trent Hodkinson from relative unknown to the code’s hottest young property has declared his successor, Daly Cherry-Evans, ready for NRL football right now.
Cherry-Evans, who is enjoying a stellar season with Manly’s feeder team, the Sunshine Coast, was this week named captain of the Queensland Residents side.
That selection comes after Manly re-signed Cherry-Evans for a further three seasons.
It also follows the departure of Hodkinson to the Bulldogs, prompting calls to blood Cherry-Evans before season’s end.
“I think Cherry could handle (NRL football) now,” Sunshine Coast mentor Brandon Costin told The Manly Daily on Wednesday.
“He’s such a confident kid, he believes in his own abilities and believes in himself, it wouldn’t need to be off the bench, he could start now.”
Costin, who coached Hodkinson last season, sees similarities in the development of the young stars.
“They’ve progressed at the same rate and learnt the same lessons playing in an open-age game,” Costin, who also doubles as the Residents’ coach, said.
“Already I really think (Daly is) starting to play a more patient, controlled style of footy which is going to suit more to an NRL style of game.”
Cherry-Evans admitted he was swayed to re-sign with the Sea Eagles after hearing of Hodkinson’s move to Belmore.
“Trent’s decision to go definitely had an affect on whether I’d stay or not and hopefully it’s opened up a door for me to get a start and hopefully they don’t look elsewhere,” he explained.
“He took the same path (in the Queensland Cup) last year, so if I can fall into first grade as easily as he has I’d be happy with that.
“At the start of the year I set myself a goal to play first grade this year and whether it comes with a bench spot or something else this year, that would be great.”
The push for Cherry-Evans to be eased into first grade this season gained momentum with a man-of-the-match performance for Queensland Country last weekend.
The Redcliffe junior scored a wonderful individual try and starred in the 20-12 victory over Queensland City.
“He played good footy, he assumed control and responsibility,” Costin said. “He was the best halfback on the field by a mile and he got rewarded with Queensland Residents selection.”

come on dessie, what are you waiting for. You need to reward loyalty and hodgkinson looks like he is already thinking about next year.

Hodkinson would have to have a few below par games in a row , for a change to be even considered. Im sure he has enough pride in himself , and respect for his team mates , to continue to put in for 2010.

There's still a comp to be won this year , and apart from st merge , IMO manly should be there abouts at the end.....maybe hodko should go and speak to wolfman about seizing opportunities...

Why not try Cherry-Evans on the bench instead of useless hacks like Bailey and Terrence. Cant do any worse!

Seeing as DCE has been signed long terms as The Eagles half for 2011, you would expect he would get some game time in 2010, blood him now..

I dont think he has played a game above par since he signed with the bulldogs, or even before that. Our attack has been terrible for at least two months and I dont think he has ran at the line for that long.

I was hoping that hodgkinson was gonna take us to the grand final, but unless something happens with our attack we might be lucky to limp into the 8.

Halfback Cherry ripe as a potential NRL champion

``BOY. Your halfback is a good player.''

With those words Queensland State of Origin coach Mal Meninga summed up the potential of State Residents skipper Daly Cherry-Evans (right) following an opposed training session at Camp Maroon at Coolum on Sunday.

Meninga's unsolicited remarks to Residents coach Brandon Costin came as a result of Cherry-Evans' slick work with the ball and organisational skills against the elite Maroons.

Meninga is not alone when it comes to his assessment of the 21-year-old Redcliffe product, who recently penned a three-year deal with Manly in the NRL.

The Sea Eagles view Cherry-Evans as the likely replacement for No.7, Trent Hodkinson, who has signed with the Bulldogs for 2011.

Hodkinson, a western Sydney product, was understudy to Matt Orford last year, but did not get a run in the NRL and was a guiding force in Sunshine Coast's historic Queensland Cup premiership win.

Costin, who also coaches Cherry-Evans at Queensland Cup level with Sunshine Coast, said the 21-year-old was on the verge of playing NRL.

``I wouldn't put it past Daly to get a call-up to the NRL this year,'' Costin said.

``I think it's going to happen soon rather than later.

``He is a better player than Trent was at the same time last year and Mal (Meninga) and (former Queensland halfback) Allan Langer were impressed with him yesterday.

``They both gave him a wrap. The nicest thing I can say about Daly is that he is very respectful. He listens and takes things on board.''

Queensland Residents play their NSW counterparts in the main curtain-raiser in Sydney tomorrow night with former star halfback Jason Taylor as Blues coach.

This is enough reason for me to believe we should give him a go this year.

Good find Cupid, he seems to be getting a fair amount of praise by some rather big names in the game..

I still like some of the other posters idea about putting him on the bench, get a taste for the NRL this year.. rather than the trials next year..

He'll get some time before the end of the season.
I think everyone knows he couldn't offer any less than old mate Chris Bailey!!
Surely Bailey's contract is up at the end of this season?
I think DCE will go great with Foran and once we get our "A" backline back next season they should be able to pour on some points.
Still, let's get through this season first !
