It's interesting, or it would be interesting to know the rationale behind who goes where?
Probably the Qld trial is more important to work out new or untried combinations.

Dont want to see any of our regular spine in the 9s TBH..Benji maybe but even then I'd be concerned a little..
The likes of Carr/Milne/FFL/YKG/Ikahifo/McCarthy/Host/McCrone/Havili are the type of names I'd prefer to see.
Less key injuries the better...

i'm pretty certain the NRL has some sort of mandate in place where each NRL club has to field what is deemed an "acceptable" level of their first grade squad..
correct me if i'm wrong but this was put into place to protect the ticket buying general public from getting ripped off paying good dollars for tickets to watch reggie reserves running around..

Just like to say that I like Jack's new haircut. Starting to look like a rugby league player again. He is going to be a gun player for us this year.

My 9's team.

1. Duges
2. JDB
3. Flo
4. Aitken
5. Maketo
6. Mata U'tai
7. Quinlan
8. Cooper
9. McCarthy. Should be enough first grade/International quality players to suit the team requirements.
10. Dufty
11. Host
12 YKG
13. Hutch
14. Havili
15. Izzac Thompson
16. Ikahifo
17. Sele
18. Guest Player

13 a side Trial:

1. Mann
2. KFFL
3. Milne
4. Lafai
5. Carr
6. Widdop
7. Marshall
8. Ahmau
9. Rein
10. Packer
11. Thompson
12. Lui
13. Matthews

14. Mose

Plus any other trialists from the Cutters.

A very good 9's side capable of advancing in the tournament and a NRL trial team to work on the combinations of our spine, focusing on attacking structures, and trialling some outside backs.

Aitken Named In NRL Nines Squad

Mon 18th January, 12:00PM A A

St George Illawarra Dragons centre Euan Aitken has been named in the team to take part in the NRL Auckland Nines competition taking place at Eden Park, Auckland on Saturday, February 6-Sunday, February 7.
The two-time Junior Kangaroo representative is aware of the intensity and speed required to take part in the two-day tournament and is keen to help the team go all the way.

“It was a good experience taking part in the tournament last year and I’m looking to build off of that this time around,” said Aitken.
“I expect Head Coach Paul McGregor to name a strong squad this season with the goal of hopefully making it at least out of the group stage.
“The intensity of the games are quite fast and the nine minute halves go really quickly so you need to adjust and make your plays as fast as you can while making sure to hold the ball.”
The Dragons have been included in the Piha Pool alongside the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Gold Coast Titans and Canberra Raiders in the two-day tournament to be staged on Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7.
All 16 NRL teams will enter the tournament which carries prize money of more than $AU2.4 million.
The teams, which have nine players, are split into the four pools and play nine minute halves.
The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage of the tournament before the two top teams play in the final.

The full squads for the pre-season fixtures are yet to be finalised but all players, provided they are fit, will either be competing against the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Redlands or taking part in the NRL Auckland Nines as both events are on the same weekend.
Each day the Dragons will reveal an additional member of the travelling squads for either the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls or NRL Auckland Nines team, alternating the teams, via dragons.com.au and our respective social media channels.
Wynnum-Manly Seagulls Squad:
Gareth Widdop (c)
Joel Thompson

St George Illawarra Dragons captain Ben Creagh is raring to go after being named in the team for the pre-season fixture against Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.
The local University of Wollongong junior is keen to test himself in the first competitive trial fixture of the pre-season and knows his teammates share a similar sentiment.

“I can’t wait to get out there and start playing some footy again as it’s been a long pre-season for us which started towards the end of October,” said Creagh.
“We’re all looking forward to getting back out there playing games and the game against Wynnum-Manly Seagulls organised by Redland Juniors will be for some of us the first hit-out of the year.
“It’s always great whenever we get the chance to play in Queensland as there’s Red V Members wherever we play up there.
“The Queensland Supporters’ Club is really great towards us and hopefully we get a few fans attending the trial match at Redlands.”

De Belin: Ready To Be A Blue

Tue 19th January, 08:00AM A A

By Chris Kennedy (NRL.com)
Fresh from a day in a pre-season emerging Blues camp, Dragons forward Jack De Belin has boldly declared he's ready to step up to interstate honours this year if Blues coach Laurie Daley wants to pick him.
The 24-year-old was bitterly disappointed to miss selection for Country Origin in 2015 and hopes to break his senior representative duck in the 2016 fixture after representing the Junior Kangaroos (alongside fellow 2016 Emerging Blues participant Kane Evans) back in 2011.

"After being there [in the camp on Saturday] and experiencing it I definitely feel like I'm made for Origin, what it's about is suited to my game," De Belin said.
"Definitely [I'm ready]. I feel like I've been ready to play rep footy for a while now but last year I definitely feel like I took that step and showed I was capable of performing on the biggest stage.
"After going through what makes a good Origin player and the structures and things they run there, it suits my game completely and I don't feel like the arena's too big for me at all. I'll be ready."
De Belin's confidence is a breath of fresh air in an era when ready-made replies about taking things one game at a time are standard.
While some may interpret his comments as brashness or as another entitled millennial, De Belin doesn't for a second claim he deserves or is entitled to an Origin jersey – just that he desperately wants it and is prepared to show he can handle it.
In many ways De Belin is a paradox; his topknot and two nose rings couldn't seem further from the style of old Blues hardnuts like Mark Carroll, Noel Cleal and Mark Harragon.
Yet his work rate, competitiveness and efficient and unfussed tackling style that stops bigger men in their tracks are a perfect throwback to a bygone rugby league era.
Underscoring his approach, De Belin's defensive stats from 2015 make for impressive reading. In 22 games he averaged 35 tackles per match, making 769 in total and missing just 27, for a lofty effective tackle rate of almost 97 per cent.
The one-time NYC player of the year hasn't matched fellow Junior Roos alumni Boyd Cordner and Josh Jackson in reaching the top level just yet but as a middle forward he is only beginning to enter his prime as a footballer.
De Belin said the chance to mix with other emerging players and hear from NSW coach Laurie Daley has provided the perfect boost late in the pre-season.
"I got a lot out of it. The camp was unreal," he said.
"I had a great time just learning what Origin is about and what makes a good Origin player. We also went through a few plays and that just to get up to speed in case any of us get called up and just getting told you're the next in line is a pretty good feeling.
"We had a seminar just learning about what Origin is about as a whole, what makes an Origin player, meeting the other boys then went out on the field and learnt about the plays and what structures they're running and what sets they have.
"Then we had a meeting with a speaker about the culture and what they've created there at the Blues and what makes a good Origin player – it's more about attitude than it is about talent."
Therein lies the reason for De Belin's confidence – the unshakable belief that hard work and dedication are the key to higher honours – and it's where he believes he can match it with the best of the best.
De Belin also concedes there is a perception the Blues have lacked the types of on-field leaders Queensland have had over the past decade of dominance – the kind to grab the game by the scruff of the neck when it is there to be won or lost.
"They reckon that Queensland, the culture they've created and the stability and the leaders, they reckon they've had more people sticking their hands up when times get tough and NSW, it kind of feels we've been short on leaders but they've definitely brought the passion back into NSW," hesaid.
"[Former coach] Ricky Stuart did a good job there and 'Loz' has definitely [carried] the flame."
De Belin said getting the nod for the emerging camp in the pre-season was a great boost personally after the disappointment of missing out on Country Origin selection last year.
"I felt like I was pretty hard done by with Country, I spoke to a few people who had the same feeling as me but there's no point sulking about it, you've got to get on with it and keep playing good footy. I felt like I did that and it was a nice reward," he said.
"Pre-season is a bit of a slog and you kind of just worry about day-to-day. For that to pop up it definitely boosts the self esteem and helps you get through those last couple of weeks knowing you've got something to aim for and it's something that is the next step in my football career."

Debelin will play origin this year, he is a tough player who runs hard and tackles well. Watch him go to another level this year and if we win a few games in a row i can see us without frizz, thompson and debelin for the origin period with rein at hooker for an injured farrah.. And matthews 18th man good times ahead

DeBelin will do well to hold down a regular 1st grade starting spot yet alone play real rep football (not this Mickey Mouse City / Country crap)

Mary has a lot more options in the forwards this year and De Belin will need to step up as in previous years he has had a pretty easy run into 1st grade.

Mr Red has got it 100% correct and there is not too many opposition players fearing lining up against Jack where Tyson is another story altogether.

No doubt some will come back with individual instances Jack did this Jack did that but how many games did he intimidate the opposition and influence the outcome?

Good club footballer at this stage with some potential but a long way to go.

Under Price his game fell away badly and had many including myself questioning whether he was even big enough or strong enough for NRL FG, he was not the only one to go backwards under Price's coaching. Under Mary he's found great form again and showed massive improvement and to me it shows that Mary is a very good coach because every player lifted and became better players under his watch in 2015.....

How many players did Nathan Hindmarsh scare the pants off of? To play origin, you don't have to intimidating, you have to be tough.

JDB is a middle forward who averaged the most minutes of any of our forwards last year besides the second rowers, clocked up over 35 tackles a game at around 97% which is up there with the best in the league, averaged over 100m a game and recorded the most offloads for the dragons whilst committing only 6 errors for the year. On top of that he only conceded 3 penalties for the year.

Sure, he may not put the fear of god into the opposition but he is exactly the kind of forward the blues have been missing, a no-nonsense middle playing workhorse, a la Corey Parker (who isn't an intimidating forward yet is one of QLD's most effective).
If he can up his playing time to 80mins, which I'd say he is capable of, and continue to develop his second phase play he will be invaluable.

People on this forum have been screaming for mongrel, we have that now but we have to balance it out and JDB is the kind of player to do that.

Debelin wont miss a game this year unless its through rep selection/injury/ suspension.. Players might not show fear but when they run it at him they know they wont be going far. Can see him chopping every qld forward in half..

Hindmarsh 17 SOO 1 try winning % 41 so lets hope he goes better than that if he makes it.

Hindy was a good honest uncompromising footballer however NSW have continually gone for this style of back rower and NSW always come up short.

Jack has had a lot of hype around him and he likes to talk it up so now up to him to deliver as the stats you are quoting = good consistent club footballer. There are plenty of back rowers churning out these types of numbers already.

If you want higher rep honours (his words not mine) and actually achieve continual success at that level you have to be able to turn a game and I am yet to see that Jack do that.

Re Parker IMO lots would have Jack run at them or tackle them rather than Corey.

Parker is an extremely tough bruising type of player on a continual basis.
