This article was published at 10:04 tonight. I didn't notice any exchange between these two. Maybe I was out of the room at the time, but I definitely didn't see or hear any of what is reported here.

Hooker exchange mars NRL final

Allegations of a derogatory comment from St George Illawarra hooker Dean Young to Wests Tigers rival Robbie Farah marred the Dragons's NRL preliminary final win on Saturday night.

In an incident which is sure to be investigated by the NRL and take some of the gloss off grand final week, Young and Farah became involved in a heated exchange when the Dragons No.9 was held up over the tryline by Farah in the 20th minute at ANZ Stadium.

Referee Ben Cummins twice offered Farah the opportunity to make an official complaint on the field, offers the fired-up Tigers skipper declined.

Tensions continued to simmer until a scrum minutes later when the pair came together where Farah suggested the comments may have had a racial tone.

The NRL has been blighted by racial slurs in recent years with Cronulla's Paul Gallen fined and stripped of the club captaincy over a comment aimed at Dragons forward Mickey Paea last year.

Racial remarks made by former Test skipper Andrew Johns also cast a cloud over this year's State of Origin series.

The NRL match review committee will investigate the incident as part of their normal review process, with any action sure to disrupt the Dragons' build-up the next week's decider.

i immediately thought it might be racial

especially after the ref kept asking him if he wanted to make a complaint. reminded me of th Gallen incident last year

It was early on in the piece.
I sincerely hope there is nothing in it and they have got over it, there is no place for that sh*t in the game, whether it is from Gallen or Young.

Also, the NRL probably have just had an unintentional marketing masterstroke with that article, being "Hooker exchange mars NRL final" will now bump it up in the google search lists.

Just watching the replay on Fox. At a scrum two minutes after the incident you can clearly hear Farah on the ref's mic saying "you called me a f***en Mediterranean Descendant".

A Mediterranean Descendant is an anachronism for a western oriental gentleman. Rascist, yes, but it's hardly the nastiest thing in the world to call someone. I got that x 100 at school every game. It only works as a sledge if you are mentally soft. Farah is an amazing player and I am a massive fan but his weakness is that he can go missing when he loses his cool. The dragons set out to bait him and it worked. He lost it tonight and his performance was suitably average. I want you in the Blues next year (second best hooker in the world) but not if you roll over under pressure. Learn a lesson and harden the f**k up.

As I have said, it's a pity such a fine game has been marred by the comment from Young.

Bennett, who is known for his fairness, is unlikely to be impressed.

But that's not for you to judge. If he found the comment offensive then he has a right to react the way he did.

Young can't match him for skill so he resorts to the lowest common denominator.

Congratulations to the Dragons for their fine effort. I do hope Bennett takes action.

honestly thought the only issue farah had was that Young it seemed gave him a decent forearm into the head, until you hear the ref badger him about a complaint. Was waiting to see him get some cheap shots in a scrum like he did to Watts earlier in the year

yeah well if Farah had got up and not whinged like a bitch no one would have been any wiser. To his credit after he calmed down and was asked did he want to complain he thought better of it and got on with it but you could tell it threw him off his game. He needed to direct his anger right back at Young and sat him on his ass (legally) in a tackle or run straight over the top of him. I like Farah as a player, but I think in the heat of the moment, he let Young get to him.
