Anyone here use Dell computers, thinking of buying one, just wondering if people rate them or not.

They are much better these days. Can't fault them at all with there after sales and warranty service.

Wouldn't touch them for home because I like to upgrade my machines, but I love 'em at work for that fact alone - fast and convenient service.

We've never had trouble upgrading Dell's. What's the issue with upgrading them?

I've seen plenty of Dells with only 1 hdd port or 2 ram slots - the controller is there but the slots where they go are empty - saves them a couple of cents but will cost you a couple of hundred to overcome, the cases don't have many expansion slots and thanks to proprietary design they don't always take standard configuration hardware either.

Got a Dell laptop, Inspiron 6400 and it works a treat, the service was great and price on equivalent machines in the shops was much higher than what I paid for this one. Couldn't be happier with them.

this is the key. you do pay an inflated price for a Dell - but the warrenty is second to none and their service is absolutely fantastic. the machine will also have extremely high build quality.

if you don't know much about the insides of a computer - then i would definitely recommend a Dell PC.

Solid quality, decent value for money but boring as batsh*t pretty much sums up Dell. You'll get decent value out of one but personally I'd way rather have a Mac or a custom built system. A solid enough choice for the average punter though I guess.

IMHO Dell is a better product with better service than just about anything out there. I've never had issues upgrading mine an when my father had a failed HDD the service guy came out and actually replaced it for him and helped him restore his data etc.

One other option that's worth a look. We took a punt on a cheap laptop from Aldi (Medion brand) a little while ago and for the money it's been brilliant. Fixed config and not much upgradeability, but it depends what you're looking for. They sometimes have desktops too. Haven't had to use service at all but I'm told Medion is one of the biggest brands in Europe..

They went through a phase where they were crapola. I bought an Inspiron 6400 laptop about a year ago.

The only problems I've had were:

Two little rubber feet on the bottom fell off. I emailed dell asking them to post two more out to me. The got me to email them a photo, they then sent out a technician to stick on the two little rubber feet for me. Kinda overcompensation, but oh well.

The two screws that hold the hdd in have gone missing now, but the hdd doesn't fall out. Shouldn't be hard to replace, but the thing isn't loose, so I'm not worried.

My older dell, a desktop is about 6 years old and still going strong, serving my little work office nicely (mainly only producing word documents, scanning, printing, emailing etc). It's a bit slow now ... but it's still powering on.

Medion are basically the German equivalent of Dell. From what I've heard they're pretty solid product, and Aldi genrally have them at great prices. Only downside is you can't buy custom configurations as far as I know.
