Fox played the Newtown vs Parramatta GF from 1981. All I can say is wow. The game has changed so much in 20 years.

Gus Gould was playing, Chika Ferguson, Sterlo, Ella, Kenny etc....

I would love to hear your comments about the game. I was 6 in 1981 so I can’t compare my thoughts of the game as it was to now.

This is what I noticed:

1. Where was the kicking game? The last tackle option was 9 times out of 10 a dart up the short side. Kicking was virtually non-existent.

2. The place kick for touch from a penalty. It all came rushing back to me.

3. The game was very very slow.

4. The defensive lines moved as single entities, there was no gang tackling evident at all. Only the closest players moved up.

5. Striking for the ball in the play the ball was funny to see again. I don’t mind it actually. I tell ya, it makes the guys play the ball properly.

6. The Scrums!!!!!! They were like a rugby union ruck, the packs would clash and people would go everywhere.

7. Most of the penalties were from scrum infringements. Tommy Raudonikus (spelling) was penalised 3 times by Hollywood Hartley for a second row feed. Probably cost them the game too.

8. The goal kicking was atrocious, Mick Cronin's season success rate was 60%, Rex Mossip was in awe of such a high success rate!!!

9. The Commentary was amusing; it consisted of Rex making some very poor observations and getting excited. There was another guy with him that piped up every now and then with one or two word comment, very strange.

10. Neither side played field position, Newtown seemed quite happy to play from their own 22 line.

11. A try was worth 3 and a conversion was worth 2. Pffft!!!!

12. The Referee, if he was in today’s game, he would be dropped in 3 seconds. half the time he just guessed I am sure.

13. The attack was very deep, most of the time the players were out of shot, that is how far back the backlines were.

14. Knock-ons were never called by the Ref, not unless it was a huge one.

Honestly, it was like a different sport. I pictured the Knights playing either side, fair dinkum it would have been 100-0 to the Knights. The players had the talent, that was obvious, but the lack of speed in the game and the lack of physical presence would have seen the older teams be blown away by the current crop........

I now know why Sterling loves Johns so much.

I did happen to catch the second half of that game on fox tonight - and it was hilarious and very controversial

You also forgot to mention the high tackles and violent play that was totally ignored by the ref back then.

What about Parramatta's cross field place kick's from a tap - what were they thinking?

No I didn't see the game, but you're right about the games back in the 70s and 80s.

I look at footage of the likes of Sterling and Lewis and see just a whole heap of short balls and chip-kicks. I suppose you need to weigh it up in the context of how the game was played, but it really does look slow doesn't it.

It actually makes me think that the veterens games these days are played at the same speed. Seeing the old fellows running around in lower grade league these days just reminds me of the footage I've seen in the early days.

Mind you I also look at the late Sir Donald Bradman's batting style and wonder how on earth he scored so many runs with such a wild technique. His bat is all over the place, he never seems like he gets behind the ball, and the footage always makes him look far too quick and like he is rushing (film back then was too fast when you played it back).

But the guy was a cricketing genius - what I interpret as a flayling bat is actually the result of a keen eye and quick batting movement. He actually does get behind the ball, but was too damn good to worry about positioning, he just popped it where he wanted to pop it.

It just makes me wonder how modern players would go in older matches of their sports - or vice versa. Messenger in 2003, Johns in 1950. Bradman in 2003, Warne in 1930. That is why it is so difficult to assess who is a greater player between eras.

Interesting stuff.

Yes, it should be bought back, I don't know why they threw it out in the first place.

6. The Scrums!!!!!! They were like a rugby union ruck, the packs would clash and people would go everywhere.

Another thing that should be back, I have noticed this year the scrums are a bit more contested than usual.
The one we wheeled on the Warriors was awesome, I would love to see alot more of it.

Your spelling of Raudonikus was right.

What about the Eels flying wedge, I think the Knights attempted something similar on the wing in a final back in the ninetys, that nearly got us a try.

hahah i watched it, it was pretty friggen cool, very very different todays teams would run rings around them, i noticed the defencive line was very compressed so a simple backline movement would score every time, and did you see where the lock defended? 5 meters behind the defence to cover any missed tackles. AHahhaha and what about sterlo starting a fight with that guy who didnt give him the ball.

Yeah I ended up having a quick squiz at the game. It was good for a
laugh for about 5 minutes  , then it got real old real quick.
I definetly think they have the game going in the right direction these days.

Although it would be interesting to see what would happen if they
brought contestable play the balls back.
Bugger the scrums off though I don't want them going back, why should
the other team get any benefit when they are the ones that dropped the
ball/got tackled on the 5th.

I watched that game, and funnily enough the ref that was doing that game was considered to be the best of that time.

My dad used to play squash with him, not that I'm happy to admit it.. :p

I guess that full-time professionalism only really started in the early nineties, by Penrith I think?? That may have a lot to do with the differences, rule changes aside.

Anyway, it wasn’t the greatest game I have seen but I could not turn it off. Hopefully Fox will play some classic matches from the past in the off-season. I would like to See Balmain v Canberra '89 GF especially.

Thanks for your thoughts.
