A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club has died in Manhattan.
Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.
He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's Sixteen Candles about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.
Ringwald also starred in The Breakfast Club, about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and Pretty in Pink.
Hughes also directed Ferris Bueller's Day Off and wrote Home Alone.
He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.

Some 80's classics.

Shame. Some classic flicks made by J. Hughes. Kevin SMith must be in mourning!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of my favourite movies of all-time. An absolute masterpiece that gets better with age.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is probably the most unlikely tear jerker of all time.

Everything is hunky dory hilarious till he is driving away from that bus station....

Yep. It butters you up a fair bit with the scene in the hotel where Candy makes that masterfully acted speech "i like me.." etc but it really gets you at the end with the final scenes.

So you're right, not only is it hilarious but also a real tear jerker at the end which gives the movie real meaning. As they say, humour and tragedy so often go hand in hand and when done well (which isn't often) you get a masterpiece like P, T and A.

I reckon foo fighters stole that line "I'm an easy target " from John Candy.
He says it in that speech.
