Do long-term deals ever succeed

Michael Witt was on a five year deal? Jaysus.

No, it was four years. And pretty cheap. That's why they had no issues letting him go one year into the deal, much like Manly later did.

Basically they tried to hoodwink him as a young player, signed him to what he thought at that age was big money, and then lock him up long term. But he fell of a cliff after damn near beating Billy fking Slater to the 2003 Rookie of the Year award. Never quite understood that, he was hugely talented. The old Eels halfback curse...

Lockyer 5-6 year deal was pretty successful. That should be the caliber of player that deserves it. The rest no more than 3 years these days.

If your an established origin and Kanagroo halfback or full back, yep worth tieing up long term.
The rest 3 years and work for your next deal!

I don't think one long term injury over the course of a long term deal cruel it. DCE the jury is still out on - He's won a comp but was that before his deal?

Lolo might still be a good bet. You have to remember lolo was damn worth 1 mill when signed & played like it. If he gets back to near his best, the cap will be inflated by then & his mill a year will still likely be money well spent.

There absolutely has to be more to Taumalolo's 10 year $10M deal. Not insinuating anything, just if every Tom, Dick & Harry can see he'll be getting unders from years 4-10 then surely he and his management did.

Sure, knowing you've got $1M a year for the next decade would be comforting. Doesn't sound very ambitious and challenging though for a pro athlete.

Did he think he'd peaked at 23?
