Where is Noel Kelly coming from?
The Australian Team of the Century hooker suggested in today's 'Sunday Telegraph' that players should be fined and not suspended for incidents occuring in the semi final series.
He suggests that the fans want to see the best players in action.
Lucky he didn't post it on this forum - otherwise he would have been slated from pillar to post, particularly by our own mate Charlie Saab
Stop thinking outside the square Ned. Rugby League is not a game for progressives - or thinkers.
Noel, you must have stuck your head in too many scrums. :sarcasm::sarcasm:

Clearly something needs to change. 2 teams out of 16 get to play in a grand final, but for suspension purposes its considered equal to a club game.

Really makes no sense whatsoever.

Melbourne would love that rule, it gives them a green light to grapple in every tackle or even invent new ways to take players out.

And become bankrupt in the process....
They'll get the message when the coffers start to empty - and the players pay packets start getting smaller..
It would stop the stupid stoush that went on in the after match conference after the Storm-Cronulla match.
Perhaps the game would have been discussed at length!!!!

I'd be happy enough if, under the current system, finals games were worth 200 points and trial games reduced to 50.

So if it is a GF qualifier, a player can walk right up to the opponent and give him a king hit from behind early on in the game to take him out and he will only cop a fine and be allowed to play in the GF ok then....

Thats the way it should be, if its illegal enough to warrant 2 weeks in the regular season, its just as illegal come finals time, thats the whole point of a suspension, to deter players from committing illegal acts at ANY TIME OF THE YEAR.

It would be completely pointless to have a suspension system in place at all if the sentence was reduced because there was a big game coming up, thats like saying "well, you shouldn't have king hit that guy, but your team is in the grand final so i guess its ok"

It may be just as illegal come finals time, but the way the system is now, the penalty is far greater.

Lets say Cameron smith tried to wrench off thaiday's head in round 10 and copped a 2 week suspension. How can you tell me thats equal to being suspended for a prelim final and a GF?? Its not. Its basically a far greater penalty compared to if the same offense happened in the regular season.

Yes...cause like Noel, you are a dinosaur. Can you imagine a game where there is no suspensions...and just fines!!!!!!!!
The rich clubs can afford to pay and the strugglers have to cop the player missing club games.

It would be much better if all sides had their best players available to be taken out in the first 5 minutes.

At least Terry Lamb could make a comeback in case Beaver knocks off his record. Don't think we'd be seeing Ellery.

It doesnt matter if it is a greater penalty or not. Don't rip at someones head and you wont be suspended. Simple.

Round 10 = misses 2 games

Round 2 of Finals = misses 2 games.

looks pretty equal to me.

Cameron Smith = "hmmm maybe ill think twice before committing blatant illegal acts"

You shouldn't be allowed to get away with illegal acts at any time of the year, so reducing suspensions just because its a finals/origin/test game wouldn't teach the players anything. All it would tell them is that its a different set of rules when the big games are being played despite the fact that the tackle is just as dangerous.

What if (using your example) its round 10 and Sam Thaiday gets the penalty and just plays on, match review committy suspends Smith for 2 weeks, life goes on.

Then in week 2 of the Finals Smith commits the same tackle and badly injures the players neck, does he get let off because his team has a big game the next week???

So your saying that missing 2 regular season games is equal to missing a preliminary final and a GF??

For starters the GF is only there to play for 2 teams out of 16.

It doesn't matter what games are involved, a two match ban is a two match ban. As someone stated earlier if Smith wasn't trying to reef Thaiday's head off he wouldn't have to worry about missing the GF.

Yes.

And suspensions are only there to deter a player from future offenses. Tell me this, if you were forced to miss a preliminary final and a grand final because of something you did illegally, would you think twice before doing it next time?

Would you STILL think twice if you knew you would get off anyway because you've got a final coming up?

Send offs and Rub outs are the only two things stopping players from taking out superstars with foul play. What we should do is try and change the witch hunt culture we have so that people like smith arent suspended for a grand final. The system is fine, its use is horrific.

Geez some are thick. An early guilty plea was 140 points. If Smith has no prior offences he plays the GF.

Why should offences be watered down? Plenty of players have missed GF due to suspension.

For all I know the NRL may find some charge against a Manly player from last night. If they go over 100 and can't beat the charge, they don't play.
