Widnes 16 Catalans 34
MICHAEL DOBSON showed why he is high on many teams’ shopping lists as the Dragons eased into the last eight. The on-loan Aussie flies back to Canberra Raiders today because Kiwi star Stacey Jones has recovered from a broken arm.
But in a bad-tempered clash Dobson signed off with 14 points to leave Catalans coach Mick Potter purring. He said: “Michael could’ve played in a tuxedo if he’d wanted to.
“A home tie in the quarters will be great for the game in France.”
Dobson scored a try and booted five goals and worked his magic on understrength Widnes after just 30 seconds. His kick set up Bruno Verges before Widnes’ Mick Nanyn and Mark Smith scored.
But Dobson was a class apart and delayed a pass for Verges’ second before collecting his own kick to touch down.
Vikings’ under-fire coach Steve McCormack said: “You’re never pleased to lose but I’m proud of the performance.”

Sounds like he's doing really really well.

I must admit I'm worried he won't want to come home.

Let's hope Henry can convince him Canberra's the place to be. (or is that the Hyperdome?)

Saw the first five minutes, in which he set up a try and kicked the sideline conversion. IMO he looks more ready for firsts than Carney at the moment. I'm looking forward to seeing him in firsts upon his return.

While its encouraging he is going well he was playing a team that would have been well below Premier League standard. I dont think Carney would get displaced based on that game alone.

It will be good having him back at the Raiders. Can't see him being selected this season.

What a great future we have got coming. I can't wait especially with some of the young forwards to back the backs up.

Zillman will be a beast when in firsts, also by far and away one of the best young guns is TLL, his turned into my favorite player.

Coach hails Australian teen

MICHAEL Dobson signed off his cameo Super League career with a man-of-the-match performance to help Catalan Dragons reach the Powergen Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

The 19-year-old halfback, who will return to Canberra this week after completing his stint as a stand-in for injured New Zealand star Stacey Jones, orchestrated the French club's 34-16 fifth-round victory over Widnes.
Dodson set up two early tries for wing Bruno Verges to put the Dragons on their way to a comfortable win, and contributed 14 points with a try and five goals.

"He could have played in a dinner jacket," Dragons coach Mick Potter, who expects to have Jones back on deck for the Super League home game with Wakefield next weekend, said.

"It was a really good performance and I'm sure the Catalans will remember his effort today, and his efforts for the last 12 weeks.
"His contribution has been great.

"He's not 20 yet. I'm sure he will be pressing for first grade as soon as he gets back."

The Dragons never looked back after establishing an 18-4 lead inside 30 minutes, but the depleted Vikings side produced a rearguard effort to ensure the French side did not run away with the match.

"We knew Widnes would be tough, and the conditions made it even tougher," Potter said.

Quinny .... don't pretend to support the young players coming through now. We know you hate them all!

Hopefully we can add Tilse, Weyman and Sau to that list.
I'd rather Thommo, Weyman, and Miller as our prop rotation.
Tilse needs to stop getting worked in every tackle and learn to use his massive frame.

1. Zilly
3. Sau
6. Carney
7. Dobbo

That is an impressive strike if they can deliver on their massive potential.

We also have TLL running out wide, Tonguey making huge amounts of tackles, Thommo racking up 170 metres a game, David Howell err... nevermind.

Our future is very bright!!

What this illustrates is that when our young players get a real chance to lead they can step up and do it. Carney is a better prospect then Dobson but has never really had the same opportunities to lead a team in first grade and so people start to call him crap.
Even Campese who many think is useless has everything thats needed to be a very very good first grader except opportunity.

I take you guys have given up on Chalk staying? Zillman probably could shift to the centers is Chalk does stay.

:?

I'd say most teams in the ESL are better than PL standard, and the best teams would do ok in the NRL.

Widnes are not an ESL side, they are first division, the level below ESL. It was a challenge cup game. The standard of that comp is very low and they were understrength.
