Dragons refuse to take part in television show promoting clubs in pre-season

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...bs-in-pre-season/story-e6frexnr-1225834068284
ST GEORGE Illawarra have pulled the plug on fans wanting an inside view into their club's pre-season after inexplicably refusing to take part in a television show dedicated to the red and whites. The Daily Telegraph can reveal that Dragons management rejected the chance to take part in a 30-minute episode of Fox Sports television show Rugby League Summertime, which contains interviews with coaches, star players and new recruits along with footage of each club's off-season training program.
Every Sydney club agreed to the positive publicity, which airs at 7pm on Fridays and is replayed twice a week - except the Dragons.

Producer and host David Tapp, who runs a production company called Power Productions, last night hit out at St George Illawarra's stance and questioned why the club was robbing supporters of free coverage.

A frustrated Tapp even emailed NRL chief executive David Gallop and media and communications director John Brady to express his disappointment.

Tapp personally emailed chief executive Peter Doust pleading for access to Dragons training to promote the club - but was denied.
Doust responded by writing: "We are not prepared to provide access to the content you are looking for. I recognise and understand the work you are doing on behalf of rugby league but unfortunately your objectives do not correlate with ours."
Tapp, in Brisbane today filming the Broncos program with Manly to be shown tonight, said the Dragons missed a golden opportunity to promote their club and sponsors.
"I'm not going to lie to you - it is very disappointing for St George Illawarra fans," said Tapp, the former Souths CEO. "Dragons fans are peppering us with inquiries about when their team will be aired. Sadly it won't be happening.
"I started to correspond with the Dragons in November but got no responses to my emails or calls. All we want to do is promote the game and the club. It's not a carve-up. We have been to every other club in Sydney. We just go there and talk footy.
"I would have thought it'd be in the best interests for the club's sponsors to have their logos emblazoned across the television for 30 minutes, three times a week."
Doust yesterday explained why his club refused to be filmed.
"All clubs are working hard to communicate with fans at this time through the media and through the club network and we will continue to do both. We can't meet everyone's needs all of the time however," he said. "The show is privately produced and our last experience with it two years ago was far from perfect.
"There was no co-operation in sharing content with our fans and we found the company hard-line in a business sense.
"We meet an enormous number of media commitments each year but we cannot meet every request, and we remain confident fans have plenty of access to team information through the wider media and club network."
What do you guys think. Do you watch this show.

Meh, who cares?

Bennett might be trying to instill a seige mentality at the club after their straight sets finals campaign last year. Getting everyone against them will only bring them closer together.

Apparently its just generic interviews and training shots of clubs, and weight sessions, and players saying "we will do well this year". All the episodes are the same, just different jerseys and talking heads.

Concidering Bennets media relationship, the way the Dragons were crucified by News prior to the finals last year (think of the Masons!), no wonder the club wants nothing to do with News Corp jurnos.

In fact, I think more clubs should snub their noses at them. Make these media types show a bit of respect!

They do all the clubs.

Its a good to see any footy on TV this time of year.

The only one's losing out are Dragons fans. What do they think of this?

The show is almost pure positivity and fluff.

Why have a problem with it?

Ok. Just wish i could convince the missus to let me get Fox.

I just wanna watch some footy. Already started training and had a couple of trials but nothing beats when the new season starts.

Why is this a story? Doust has politely informed as to why they didn't allow this to happen:

Doust yesterday explained why his club refused to be filmed.

"All clubs are working hard to communicate with fans at this time through the media and through the club network and we will continue to do both. We can't meet everyone's needs all of the time however," he said. "The show is privately produced and our last experience with it two years ago was far from perfect.

I am sure the Dragons will look after their own fans in terms of pre-season coverage.

On ya bike Tapp.

I would've liked to think the NRL could look after this pre-season stuff through Foxsports on their own instead of using an independent third party.

I think there is another side to the story.

I'm guessing Tapp makes money from this, and seeks access to the clubs and players for free. Same deal I guess that the print media and radio, and tv news items. However, where does one draw the line? Saints get paid for broadcasting their games, somewhere the line between paid and obligation has to be drawn.

Also, Saints would have no control over the presentation. I haven't seen the show - sounds harmless enough, but in light of what Cronulla went through -and their ex player Matthew Johns - last year, noone can blame a club for tightening up media access.

I'm guessing Doust should be blamed for being over protective if anything.

Someone also mentioned Bennet - who generally has the same relationship with the media as rabbits have with mixamatosis. It wouldn't be out of the question for Bennet to have said no, leaving Doust little choice. After Darius Boyd's Harpo Marx impersonation and the general media attacks over Saints alleged GF T shirts and their refusal to move their rightly earned home semi, here's no free beer and sausage sangers for media workers at the Taj Mahal any more.

2 other points.
1) A few years ago C9 was doing a special on FOG's. All contacted players agreed to be interviewed for free, except Allan Langer, who wanted a fee. Langer wasn't used.

2) Clubs are under increasing financial pressure at a time when the demands on their time by the media is growing. Currently - in response to some pressure from the NRL, GWS and the general public - players are all over the place doing school visits and PR work. This is right in the middle of the trial period and just before the start of the season. It's a very busy time for clubs.

Having said all that - the fact that 15 clubs could fit them in suggests that Saints could have too, but it doesn't mean they are wrong.

Yet another nothing story from the Tele trying to dig at the Saints.

Love how they have the big stink at the top of every article and as you get to the bottom (which most people with short attention spans never read) the facts come out, which makes it seem quite reasonable. Problem is, for most the damage is done in the headline and first 2-3 paragraphs.

Good on Saints for sticking up for themselves.

In the end it's the fans that loose out on seeing behind the scenes happenings at their club in the pre-season. Etc. It's not a big deal but surely the Dragons could have simply co-operated. It wouldn't be hard.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the Bulldogs edition. It was informative, good interviews, lots of footage behind the scenes etc. Really well done.

The Dragons, through their own means, can pass on the same pre-season info.

I don't think their fans are missing out at all.

That's right, his production company provides the low budget show to Fox Sports & it's shown to keep fans informed about how the club is progressing ( injuries & how new signings are settling in ). Nothing fancy, just some off-season rugby league content.

If fox sports are that concern about the fans, then they should have had a look what they done last year , by mocking a club eg the dragons by showing the puff the dragon segment , and now they whinge the dragons refused.

The media cant take the cake and eat it , they are only thinking about themselves not the fans at all

hypocriticy from fox sports and telegraph make me laugh

Correct, IIRC they produced an episode of Dragons TV at the Mercury Challenge last weekend featuring Dell and Matt Cooper.

In addition to this, I understand Big Dell has a Twitter and Facebook and they've had two different fan events this year already (Dell's party and Sunday's fan day).

The suggestion they're shutting fans out because they don't want to partake in a two-bit TV show is laughable.
