Draft of 18-year-old players

Clubs were given a briefing on how an annual territorial draft of 18-year-old players, opposed by clubs including Brisbane, Sydney Roosters and Parramatta, could work for 2006. Details will be given to the clubs later this month and the issue would be discussed at a meeting of club officials in February before a possible vote by the NRL partnership committee. The Courier Mail - Paul Malone 09dec04

Don't know if I like this idea of a draft. Not fair that clubs nurture their young and upcoming junior stars only for them to be thrown into a pile whereby players drafted out to other clubs. Surely clubs whom have a strong junior development would be given preference over others whom simply steal from others and have virtually no juniors.

Strange the roosters are opposed to it as I thought they had no juniors as to speak.

roosters were opposed because the territory they wanted was circum-navigated by Matthew Flinders!

The reason is that the Roosters may only have 4 junior clubs but each clubs roster is worth a out 4 million from all the juniors they bring in from other areas.

Its a crap Idea. You should be able to recruit whoever you want whenever you want. Parra spends alot on the Juniors being restricted too one particular area could destroy a clubs Junior teams. Whoever thought oif this has not thought outside te square at all.

Bad Idea. Why have juniors since they were 15 and then have the drafted when they look like a good prospect.

You need to have a draft at the premier league level and stop players that haven't been drafted into the NRL from playing in the NRL.

It's simple. Each team has it's top 25 like now with an additional 15 making it 40 player rosters. They can only use the top 25 unless their injuries get too great and then a player can be put into the bottom roster and swapped for one of the 15 players. But that player that is dropped cannot return for the rest of the NRL season.

25 players is enough to service an NRL team. 40 is more than enough if any team has a horror run.

there are major drawbacks with that,

there are a number of kids out there who would be well intruly ready to make the step up who would be listed outside that 25, during the course of the year a classic example with last year is Jack Afamasaga and Karmichael Hunt., would Bennett known about Hunts ability prior to listing his 25 man sqaud???

I don't think we can afford to hold back the development of a future star when you have vultures like the english superleague clubs circling them.

Also, I don't know what other people think but I get a personal buzz out of seeing kids play Flegg early in the year only to "rip it up" later on, in firstgrade. We were in a unique position last season where we had about 6 players play their first grade debut after starting the season in flegg.

If those bloke weren't given a go I have no doubt we would of picked up the spoon.
