The St George Illawarra Dragons have lodged the appropriate Notice of Election foreshadowing their intention to defend Craig Smith’s alleged offence of Striking, Grade 3 in the game V Broncos on Sunday at WIN Stadium.
Peter Doust, Chief Executive Officer stated, "The Club is wholeheartedly committed to defending Craig’s innocence of the striking charge and we are looking forward to the opportunity to present our case to the panel of former Rugby League players involved in the NRL Judicial process." He said, "This is Rugby League, accidents happen."
Mr Doust went on to say that he believed it was of the utmost importance that the incident was assessed on the circumstances of this incident only and that Craig’s previous visits to the Judiciary did not in anyway prejudice his defence. While it is true to say that his previous offences carry loadings, which is the only part his previous record should play in these proceedings, he also said he was very disappointed by the ongoing furore and public comment, which he found difficult to believe would not influence the process.
Craig Smith commented, "What people need to understand is that I am embarrassed to have to defend my involvement in this incident which was accidental. I am sorry Kevin is out of the game for a few weeks, but I know with all his experience he would understand accidents do happen." </td></tr></tbody></table>

Well, its all or nothing now anyway, but best of jungle luck to StGIll in their fight against the evil empire. We either plead guilty and lose him for weeks or fight and win/lose. What choice ? Fingers crossed - I know all my finger bananas will be crossed for the next two days as well as the clumsy ones next to the dextrous one. I'll have to look in the freezer (every tree should have one) for any fish fingers.............

They had no choice, but to take on puppet hall.
Be interesting to see the result.
Dragon supporters are screaming blue murder over this blatant attempt to interfere with the team.
Why is it that only Bennett could see what happened and interpret it as an act of thuggery?
Why is he allowed to comment on the referees decision and no mention of a fine made?
Bet Folkes is spewing.

Lord Ted, I assume that you're reading the same Qld press that I'm subjected to.
I've lost count of the amount of times that Bennett has blamed the ref for last weekend.
I don't know which game he was watching but it wasn't the same game I saw.

You're right, he has really laid the slipper into Mander and no one has questioned him on this... why is that?

Willow,
I don't read the courier mail,I have the SMH on my favourites and I read the Australian.(not a lot of league there I admit)
The local rag is woeful.
Of course we would get some of the same T.V.news.
St Bennett has not been called to task and won't be.
Imagine the outcry in qld if he was made to answer. The rags would have pictures of Kevvie and demand that "justice" be done.
St Bennett the hero.
The fact that Folkes mentioned the ref would never be considered a 2001 precedent, would it?
Therefore, one can only conclude that the Dragons are being victimised.
