Name suppression extended for ex-Kiwis star charged with sex offences

UPDATED 11.50am Thursday August 10, 2006

A former test rugby league player today had name suppression extended until a hearing on the issue next week.

The former Warriors and Kiwis player faces three sexual violation charges, including rape, arising from alleged offences on June 15.

Interim name suppression had been to expire tomorrow.

But defence counsel Gary Gotlieb told Auckland District Court this morning that there were compelling reasons for it to be continued.

He said he had presented a detailed submission to the court and he intended to call witnesses to give evidence.

The hearing over whether the former Kiwi should get continued name suppression was set down for next Tuesday and was expected to take half a day.

Agree, but under the law in this country, innocent until proven guilty.

It's the continued long term suppression that gets up my nose. They get
the suppression because of who they are. Any other Joe Blow has to cop
it sweet.

There was a very small piece in the Herald sometime over the last few weeks (that I can't find now), but it basically said that supression was continued and that his lawyer had pulled some strings to keep everything secret.

I think the article called it an "unusual move", so it sounds like strange things are afoot.

And douglasallen91 - you won't get this board in trouble if you PM the name to me! (please?) :)
