Performance enhancing drugs is the realm of sports bodies.

Anything else is up to the law of the country and police.

So when a sporting body finds a non performing yet illegal substance, why is it not directed to the correct authorites?

Well thats the question around this case really.

He was found guilty, and Rule at Hull suggested withdrawing all the players who took this out of the Derby game.

The RFL said no to this and allowed Gleeson to play. Then informed the authorities later when the drug had time to leave the system of said players. Gleeson was told to change his story to one where he got the drugs himself, not through anyone at the club.

But the drug isn't performance enhancing and is allowed to be taken by sportsmen, just not within 24 hours of a game. So coming clean would of helped the RFL in this case i believe, but a few people panicked and now we have a mass cover up of drug taking at one of the top clubs in the league.

Which is never a good thing. :(

All comes about through lack of education in my opinion. I lectured sports science students on this for many years and the number of cases that are clouded by ignorance, claimed or genuine is astonishing. Dietary supplements are uncontrolled and in many cases, ineffective or unrequired. The team doctor/conditioner is clearly a muppet.

They've done something great in the Stateofmind organisation about educating re the signs of depression. Would think it would be a good idea to set up something similar on the hidden dangers of dietary supplementation.

To be fair to the players, if you have a supplement and the team doctor says its ok, then your going to believe him. These guys are Rugby players, not medical people. So i'd agree with you.

That some players took some pills which apparently are legal, just not before the game and one of them was silly enough to take one in the period he shouldn't do is one issue. Its not good, but its hardly a terrible blight on the game.

The fact that the govening body then got together with the club and decided to cover this whole thing up, not follow the correct procedures, let Hull even play an important game to give the drugs time to get out of the system is terrible. It really should lead to some people at the top being sacked.

They turned a badish situation involving a mid table table team into a credibility destroying situation, which could effect the whole game.

Bit out of the loop with regard the full details. What evidence is there against the RFL? Is it Gleeson's word against theirs?

UKAD have come out and said the RFL did everything by the book.

Typical Daily Mail though, they only ever cover RL when there's a scandal to dig through.
