Dye has brain surgery after HK race fall

June 25, 2006 - 9:44PM

International jockey Shane Dye has undergone brain surgery in Hong Kong's Prince Of Wales hospital after a race fall at Sha Tin.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Jockey Club said Dye was conscious when he left the course but lapsed into unconsciousness when he arrived at the hospital.

The spokesman said Dye had undergone an operation to relieve pressure on the brain and his condition was not immediately available.

Dye's mount Ambitious Marjue came down at the 1200m mark of the second race and Anthony Delpech also fell when his horse Metro Leader was unable to avoid the fallen horse.

Delpech rode in the following race but was then stood down with bad bruising.

A former New Zealander, Dye has won every major race in Australia including four Golden Slippers and the Melbourne Cup in 1989 aboard Tawriffic.

He moved to Hong Kong in 2000 and has been among the top riders every season and is currently fifth on the premiership with 43 winners for 2005-06.

He had/has a lot of critics (mostly punters) who said he didnt give all his horses every opportunity to win.
I like him though, he is a great character.
Hope this is not the end of his career.

Very sad. Hopefully RS can pull through. Great jockey and a great person for the sport. May not be everyones cup of tea but he has won me a few $$$$ over the years especially on the big O. Thinking of you mate.
