Brisbane has just completed its worst ever NRL season.
The Broncos collected their first wooden spoon, confined to last place by a big loss to old rival North Queensland on Thursday night.
They got their coach sacked, lost one of their best young players to the Titans, and have been slammed from pillar to post by legends of the famous Red Hill club.
And those facts make this statistic even more stunning.
Brisbane still has, by far, the largest supporter base in rugby league.
That’s according to research completed by Sydney analytics company Roy Morgan, who say the Broncos have the support of 930,000 people this year.
That figure is down 8.5 per cent on 2019 when the same company believes 1,016,000 people supported Brisbane in the NRL.
And still, despite that steep decline and their horror season, the Broncos shadow the rest of the competition in terms of the size of their fan base.
Roy Morgan emailed the results of this year’s research to foxsports.com.au on Friday.
They have Melbourne as the second best supported club in the NRL with a total 901,000 fans this year, up 3.2 per cent on last season, and they are miles ahead of North Queensland who comes in third with 535,000 fans (down 2.9 per cent).
The Broncos may be terrible this year but they still dwarf 2020 premiership rivals like the Panthers, Raiders and Roosters.
