Panthers scored try on the siren to win 5 tries to 4 after St Mary's dropped a ball while in possession on the half way and a Panther picked it up and ran half the field unopposed just as the siren sounded. In relation to the performance of the Panthers boys there ball security was poor with too much dropped ball and they also conceded far too many penalties for infringements in the play the ball. St Mary's side looked to be a combination of their Ron Massey & Sydney Shield squads.

Will be interesting to see how the NYC boys go this year with the core of that dominant side now to old. Is Ciraldo still coaching them?

I don't believe so. I believe he is now an Assistant Coach to Anthony Griffin.

I thought I saw Garth Brennan there but I could be wrong?

The coach up in the box appeared to Guy Missio (Can't remember his surname).

I didn't watch any SG Ball last season so I didn't recognise any of the Under 20 boys. There were almost two sides so lot's of changes after first 20 and then those who came off after 20 basically went back on for last 20.

A couple of our forwards had to play for the St Marys side in last 15 minutes so they obviously ran out of players.

St Marys were very spirited and gave as good as they got, although our poor ball security and indiscipline certainly gifted them 70% field position for most of the match.

As a side note. The St Marys coach looked very much like former Panther Luke Swain. He was wearing floppy hat but it certainly looked him.

David Tangata-Toa is the coach. U/18's are national Champs so no reason we won't be right up there again. Blore, Brown, Izzard, Luani etc already have experience so should go well

Your right it was David Tangata-Toa up in the box.

I don't think any of last year's twenties played last night. Saw Blore at the game but he didn't play. Assume it was pretty much a trial to see who get's first crack in the squad once season commences.

The SG ball half Sullivan was ball player of the year as well, he struggled when he went up to NYC but hopefully he can partner Blore and find his feet.

The youngster wearing the seven last night was sort off a lanky kid who looked to be Islander or perhaps Indigenous origin.

Panthers had a young winger who is of African origin. Assume he is off Sudanese or Somalian background as there has been resettlement of families from those countries here in recent times.

Sean O Sullivan has signed with the roosters.
Bill Benjamin is the guy from Africa.
Sam Martin Savage is the young half.

A Coastie playing for the panthers! I like it. Cheers for the info.

Edit: Looks like Luai is still the right age, will he play much NYC this year?

Yeah he looked good in open space, poor miss for their try hope that isn't a sign of things to come, we already have RCG and Latu who will do that sometimes in the middle. Anyway I was looking over our squad today and I'm excited by the forward pack, Kikau is listed as 120kg and he used to fill in out in the centres in NYC, I hope he gets it going this year.

We are (equal) premiership favourites before a ball is kicked for the first time in memory, and my memory is long. Maybe the first time ever.

In 2005 we were among the favourites, and I recall Phil Gould (then at the Roosters) tipping us, but I don't see how we could have been ahead of the Grand Finalists, the Roosters and Bulldogs (both of them missed the finals and we did as well). You have to go back to 1992. We were probably favourites that year at the start. Didn't do us much good.

In 2004 we were behind the Roosters. Our GF win was regarded as an upset. I remember it well. Turned out the betting markets were dead right. We finished behind them and the Dogs.

Anyway because it's very difficult to bring these things up six months later, these are Sportsbet's current premiership odds-

$8- Panthers, Storm
$9- Cowboys, Raiders
$10- Broncos
$12- Warriors, Sharks
$13- Roosters
$15- Rabbitohs
$17- Titans, Eels
$21- Bulldogs
$26- Tigers, Manly
$101- Dragons
$151- Knights

We'll definitely be top 4 and then we'll see what happens. Matty Moylan will step up yet again and take JT's spot as the best player in the comp

Blake can't be moved playing like he is. Would be a big mistake I think. Peach back to the bench if Whare comes back the player he was
Blake mostly played wing in the 9's was just as good. Peachey needs to play 80mins for my liking

I'd have our bench as Latu, Akoulala, JFH & May. I just don't see much game time for our bench
