Eels football boss Daniel Anderson hails 'tremendous' coach Brad Arthur

Daniel Anderson quit his post as referees' boss to fix the Eels. So which is the tougher gig?

Parramatta's new general manager of football chuckles before answering.
"It's a maligned position, there's no doubt about that," he said in reference to the pink shirts rather than those wearing the blue and gold.

"The referees do their best, I saw it up close, they work hard at their craft. They are poleaxed when they get it wrong and rarely get any credence when they get it right.
"I do have a lot of sympathy for the profile of the role in balance with what the guys do. It's a tougher role."

His new role has its own challenges. For the first time since 2009 – the year Anderson coached Parramatta to the grand final – long-suffering Eels fans have cause to be excited.
Anderson had never met coach Brad Arthur before taking up his new post but the initial signs suggest the relationship is working.

"It's been good, he's a tremendous coach with strong ideals and great values for the club to build on," Anderson said in his first interview since rejoining Parramatta.

"The players are obviously enjoying his coaching because they're playing tough, genuine rugby league."

In essence, Anderson has been employed to free up Arthur to focus on coaching.

Issues such as retention, recruitment, NRL liaison, grassroots development – tasks clipboard holders of the past have been burdened with – are Anderson's domain.

Some wondered whether a man who previously coached Parramatta would be able to step back and allow another man to do so. But Anderson said overseeing the Hills Hawks more than sated his coaching fix.

"I've been out of coaching for four years," he said. "I'm a part-time Thursday night assistant for the under 12s. That's satisfying my desire to be a coach.

"It's as challenging now as it's ever been. I'm enjoying what I'm doing now. Coaching is not a job you apply for in the NRL, you are targeted and recruited.

"In general, that door is probably shut. I had a good time in coaching and I'm enjoying what I'm doing now in administration."

In some respects, the Eels are getting the band back together. Anderson is back at the club he loves and so too are Nathan Hindmarsh, Luke Burt and Nathan Cayless, the former players all taking up coaching roles at various levels.

Along with chairman Steve Sharp, chief executive Scott Seward, chief operating officer John Boulous and Arthur, they are building a new culture at a club which has earned the previous two wooden spoons.

"It's not a different outlook [for me], I've always wanted what's best for the club and that will never change," Anderson said.

"We want to be successful, we want to be the pride of western Sydney. You have the same sort of ambitions. The beauty for me is I'm out of the furnace of coaching, which is high pressure. It's a tough gig.

"It's a big club in the middle of western Sydney. It has a lot of really parochial fans and draws attention. We're a proud club, an honest club and we want to do the best for our fans."

Good, positive article.

It feels weird reading all this positive press but hey, I'm not going to complain :D

Arthur's was my second choice behind Henry. I'm still filthy about it.

We'd be 5 and 1 if Henry's was our coach.

I guess that answers the question of who has taken over Peter Nolan's role.

Tony, as far as I know, DA has not been handed recruitment and retention, they are appointing someone to that role

DA ha an organisational responsibility, to be blunt no one in their right mind would let him loose on recruitment and retention, leave that to BA and a specialist

It makes sense. If you've got an NRL/head coach and a General Manager of Football you hardly need a recruitment manager too.

It's just like how some recruitment/retention decisions impact later decisions. For example signing Mossop and retaining Junior Paulo last year and retaining Mannah this year (if we do) means we will probably have to let go of Lussick at the end of next year.

It clearly says recruitment, retention and grassroots development are his domain, all of which were previously Nolan's. Either it's true or Prozenko is just making it up but it's pretty clear what the article says.

I'd say the new guy will have a watered down version of Nolan's role though, with many of Nolan's responsibilities rolled into the GM Football job. Otherwise without any responsibility for recruitment/retention, what the f**k does a GM Football even do? Booking Parra pool for recovery sessions is hardly a fulltime job.

I'd say Wilson will just be head of junior recruitment, answering to Anderson.

There was a small piece in today's herald saying the eels are looking at (Grahame?) Hughes from the bulldogs as Nolan's replacement. I don't have a link , I read it old school on the actual paper

Tony, DA will not be on the road evaluating anyone, his role is in the office, I know you think he is a genius, but he has an administrative role. We don't need to read too much into titles

I don't think I am wrong in my understanding of the duties, but see how it all goes

You need to scan it in, upload that to an online file storage service and then provide the link. Otherwise the mods will delete it and ban you.

Also I read it was Mark Hughes.

So are you saying recruitment, retention and development are DA's domain but he has nothing to do with the role? It's a bit confusing wouldn't you agree? Nolan wasn't On the road scouting - that was others who still work for the club. I won't argue the point any further I just hope he does as good a job as Nolan did.

What that means is that the duties involved in Nolan's job are being split up. Anderson isn't taking all of Nolan's responsibilities, just some of them. The new guy (Craig Wilson I believe) will be taking on the rest of Nolan's tasks.

Craig Wilson has been working under Nolan for at least a couple of years. I'm pretty sure DA is the New Nolan. The question is who is in charge and the answer seems to be DA.
