I agree. Heuristics like this are often the best information we have.
Well the Dragons and Storm have basically done the interviewing for us. If our f**kwit board have half a brain they should understand that. Hannay hasn’t been offered / or won, any gigs. So yes, heuristics do absolutely come in to play here.

We had a style that worked for us and we were in a premiership window. At the end of 2021 there was massive hope. We would’ve been mad to start a rebuild.

We didnt need a 100% rebuild we did priorities the wrong players..

Reed should have been re-signed before he had a chance to go on the open market.

Barlow / Reg over paid

No outside backs

The club needs to make tough choices this year on the below players..

Bryce Cartwright 2024 2025
Clint Gutherson 2024 2025
Joey Lussick 2024 2025
Wiremu Greig 2024 2025
Shaun Lane 2024 2025 MO
Sean Russell 2024 2025
Ryan Matterson 2024 2025 PO
Reagan Campbell-Gillard 2024 2025
Maika Sivo 2024 2025 MO CO
Junior Paulo 2024 2025 2026

NONE of those are must keeps, so either low ball the merkins that can play to a first grade standard or let them walk.

A majority of those players listed can negotiate at the start of November with other clubs..

I would be telling them they wont be resigned for 26 so you are free to sign somewhere else for 26 and if you want go in 25

Gutherson and Cartwright are the only 2 I'd keep for 2025. The rest can go.

It's downright scary that the following are contracted to be with us until the end of 2026... unless they can obtain a more attractive deal elsewhere:
Paulo
Matterson (player option, which he can trigger to stay)
Lane (mutual option, for which he can trigger the player option part)
Sivo (mutual option, for which he can trigger the player option part)

Of those contracted until end of 2025:
Cartwright - would be ok as a bench back rower, provided we sign better starters
Gutherson - might almost last until then, maybe as a bench playmaker of sorts?
Lussick - won't get out of Cup again, but by being there is blocking others
Greig - shouldn't get out of Cup again, unless filling in for injuries
Russell - ditto
Campbell-Gillard - still something to offer, but maybe a reduced or bench role, provided we sign better front rowers

Mental shortcuts and biases, you say?

It’s about separating signal from noise. Blaming ‘coaching’ for everything is naive and lazy. The type of thinking that lets merkins think that sacking a coach will solve all the club’s problems. Have a look at these merkins. “We need to announce the coach soon enough to sign players for next year blah blah.” It’s obviously all part of someone else’s job description. They don’t want a coach balls deep in everything. They want someone to run the team he’s given.

You only do that if they’re loyal or you offer them overs. Have you ever sold a house? You get the best price by maximising the number of buyers. It’s the same reason players wait and test the market.

I don’t agree. They had some good players, but most of them were early career. Only four of them played Origin that year and they were all forwards. One was Daniel f**king Wagon.

The 2001 team holds the record for most points scored by a team in a single season.
