Eels tell rivals not to approach Jamie

Parramatta require runaway star Jamie Lyon to agree not to play for another NRL club until the end of 2006 before they will grant him a release to play for country team Wee Waa.

The club has warned that if any other club approaches Lyon while he is still contracted to Parramatta it could become an anti-tampering issue to be dealt with by the NRL.

Speculation is rife that Manly have gone after Lyon in the hope of signing him for next season, and that Sea Eagles recruitment manager Noel Cleal is a key figure in that play.

Cleal was formerly the recruitment officer for the Eels, but split with them in acrimonious circumstances last year and rejoined the club he starred for as a player.

Asked yesterday if his club was chasing Lyon, Manly chief executive Paul Cummings said: "We have not been involved in any discussions relating to Jamie Lyon. He is a Parramatta player and anything that happens with him is up to them."

Cummings said the Sea Eagles would love to talk to Lyon if he became a free agent.

"I'm sure every club would be interested in a player like him if he was available," Cummings said. "But unless he becomes available there is nothing we or any other club can do."

Cleal defended himself against talk he was trying to snare Lyon for Manly, saying: "I'm great friends with Jamie, that's all, and I'm going to stay that way, for him.

"I brought him to Sydney when he was 15 and I'm closer to him than any other player I've recruited."

Parramatta forwarded a document to Lyon's manager, Allan Gainey, on Friday and Gainey has sent a copy of it on to Lyon in Wee Waa in north-western NSW.

Neither the Eels nor Gainey were prepared to say what was in it, other than to confirm that it included a proposal under which Lyon would be cleared to play for Wee Waa this year if he agreed to certain conditions.

Parramatta had previously said Lyon would not be cleared to play for Wee Waa this year.

But The Sun-Herald understands that for Lyon to get an immediate release to play for Wee Waa, he would have to agree to play for the Eels if he plays in the NRL before his Parramatta contract runs out at the end of 2006.

The Sun-Herald contacted Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald yesterday and asked if he could confirm that was the arrangement. He replied: "I will neither confirm nor deny anything like that."

Asked if he thought Manly were after Lyon, Fitzgerald replied: "I haven't heard anything from them to suggest that is what they are trying to do."

Asked how he would feel if Manly got Lyon, Fitzgerald replied: "I don't answer hypothetical questions."

But he did say that while Lyon remained a Parramatta contracted player, anti-tampering would become an issue if another club approached him.

"Right now nothing has changed and Jamie is contracted until the end of 2006, so if there was an approach it could be deemed to be breaking the anti-tampering rules," he said.

NRL chief executive David Gallop confirmed that was the case.

Cleal said he kept in close touch with Lyon.

"I've been pig-shooting with Jamie recently and we'll go again soon," Cleal said. "And we have regular dialogue over the phone. I'm concerned for him as a person, above everything else. I want him to be happy.

"I think it's a footballing tragedy that a player as good and as charismatic as he is is not playing football for someone - even Wee Waa.

"I know people will suggest I'm trying to get Jamie across to Manly. I can't help that. I'm his friend, so people might think that. I'm just trying to be someone he can talk to."

Its the only thing that Fitzy is doing right at the moment.

There is no doubt that Cleal is enticing Lyon to the Eagle scum, we just can't prove it. Oh and After watching tonights performance I dont think his son was any good, he did at one stage show promise but that was until he went to Manlyscum.

Lets face it 3/4 dont win competitions for you but half backs do. Lets concentrate on the talent available to us suchas Tim Smith and our future should be good.

What has brought about this change of mind from Parramatta ?????

Conspiracy Theory #345234
Brian Smith will leave Parramatta before 2006. This will allow Jamie to return to the Parramatta while he is under contract, and he will not be pissed off that he was excluded playing for Wee Waa.

If that fails, appoint Brian coach of Wee Waa

The thing that pi**es me off is that Jamie walked out on the club and if he doesn't play for the Eels again and goes to Manly in 2 years time than Parra will only have $3m to spend because Jamie's $250K comes under the salary cap. The NRL needs to look at this. We are getting no value from him and he is holding a gun to our head. If we give him a full unconditional release I bet you he would be named in Manly's side next week. The means any high paid player can hold a club out to ransom if he wants to leave because no club can afford not to spend most of their salary cap. Thant money could be used for topping up the juniors or buying a superstar like Orford and the likes. The NRL needs to act on this now!!!!!!

He will be released, this shouldn't count as part of the salary cap. I think his contract will be maid void, if he wants to return to the NRL and Parramatta it will be at a figure well below the current 250K and maybe just incentive based.

Ian Schubert said yesterday that unless he is on the open market then he will be under the Eels salary cap. He will be given a conditional release which means he can't play for any body else so we have to wear his contract. Not fair in my opinion!

I can't see it working like that realistically. The fact is his contract probably no longer exist, an agreement that he cannot join another NRL club will instead. If that is the system then it needs to be revised. Since he is not being paid by Parramatta, how the hell can the money be under the salary cap.

Like I said, The NRL are saying he is not a free agent and can't play for any other NRL side then he will come under the Eels salary cap. Sounds ludicrous I know as we will not be paying him but that's the rule and the NRL need to change it now for goodness sake.

i dunno about the situation but ian schubert sounds a little wrong.

lyon walked out on us, it means we can void the contract at any time. the only way we'll release him and let him play for Wee Waa is a conditional release, which is probably just another contract saying 'hey if we kill this contract holding u back, u cant play for another club till its term finishes'

Whats the point in having Jamie agree to a deal that says, we'll let you play for Wee Waa this year if you play for us next year or the year after

He already has a contract that says he will play for us next year and the year after

Any contract with Jamie, aint worth the paper its written on IMO.
