The 2004 season has come to a close for the Parramatta Eels about a month earlier than we all wanted it too. When you start training for a season, all you can think about is "it will all be worthwhile if we win the comp" but unfortunately it wasn't to be the case.
It certainly was a difficult year for us - and the reasons behind all of that has been well documented. We had some horrific injuries to key players, played some inconsistent footy and were always on the back foot. It might sound like a boring cliche from a boof headed footballer but the best thing about the season was how we all stuck together and remained loyal to each other for the entire year.
Smithy has copped a big bagging all year which is totally unjustified. You only have to look at the players he has attracted to the Club for next year, and those that have re-signed (myself included) which indicate the regard in which he is held. The simple fact is that footballers want to be coached by Brian Smith, and the way he is thought of by the current players is an indication of that. No one has done it tougher this year than Smithy - he is a true Parramatta man and is the man to lead us back to the top.
Finally to the Parramatta fans out there - Thank you. The true fans have remained loyal and solid behind your team, and we really do appreciate it. I know I copped a bit of a bagging earlier in the year when I suggested "do a better job yourself" but it was mainly out of frustration and talk that our supporters were going to hold a rally against us. That didnt happen - because I know at the end of the day real supporters don't carry on like that. Thanks for everything this year on behalf of all the players - we are already looking forward to 2005.
