i predicted when the draw came out that we would be lucky to have won 2 out of 5 at this stage (being eels and manly). how wrong i was!

my big worries were the bench, our wingers and the coach

my big positives were dykes, noddy, and our forwards (all fit)

what a difference a few games make

i'm fairly happy with the bench. can be improved though
i'm happy with one winger. but we all know everyones thoughts on that.
i'm getting happy with the coach. mixed feelings re some matters

dykes and noddy have been a revelation. they aren't doing everything for the team but they are taking pressure off the other players
ditto forwards. gallen has been our best this year

BUT

i only rate our team at about a 6.5 or 7/10 so far

i just feel that we can play alot better for longer periods in the game. in every game this year we have played so poorly that we look like our previous years debacles

the best part is that we can improve greatly, yet we are sitting 2nd on the table. this is normally what seperates the contenders form the pretenders. ability to improve when you're already above the other teams

The best thing about the season so far is they have not put 80 minutes together. When they do - look out!

I'd love to see Merritt brought back onto one of the wings but :? ... Also like to see McGoldrick back for Mellor but whatever.

Depth isn't a problem this year like in the past. For example the next jets game should have Ice, Dumas, Galloway, Lomu and others in their pack.

But the biggest plus is the start the boys have had. After the bye the sharks will be on 10 points. After 6 rounds last year they were on 4 points. We ended up missing the 8 by like 2 points didn't we? If the boys can stay injury free in key positions and not get f**ked over by the rep season then the side could be a top 4 team. It doesn't matter where you land in the top 8 this year as any team can beat any but I'd love to go into the first week of the finals with a game at shark park! But still... 21 weeks left, before we can think about that

As if they didnt put 80 minutes in against the cowboys. To keep the second top attacking team one try at 49% possession is quite a feat (for us anyway), espically with their back 3. im not that much of a league fan but i'd say that would have to bu our best performance since 2003, technically, probably not score wise.

we defended well and didnt give up easily, espically on our own line and we kept going and attacking well right up until the last minutes. the team was very commited and enthusastic. we also didnt give up conselation tries at the end of the match like we often have done. eg Bulldogs

Look at how many tackles they missed against the cowboys

look at how many dropped balls they had against the cowboys

:?

if the truth be told i think it was the best so far in 2005

our weaknesses were not really targetted though

dropped ball and missed tackles may not have cost us today but eventually will

look at 2004 for proof

Pretty much agree with all that.
On the negative side I dont think we can replace Noddy,Dykes (to some extent),Peachey,Stevens or Nutley).
We can cover them sure but to lose any of them long term would be a problem.
On the plus side Gallen is making a pretty good fist of lock and is getting into that cannot be replaced category.
Reece Williams improvement is stunning and enough has been said about Covell.
Just hope we replace big guys with big guys when someone is out and not revert to the utilities. It upsets the way we play.

Exactly the same could have been said - indeed it WAS said by a few people - after the Parra game.

Gotta tighten up the ball control and silly error rate. Then we can get excited.

I don't think the Sharks have played well for the full 80 minutes since Lang left. We were crap for periods that year too. 6-30 Dragons, 6-36 Eels, anyone? 1999, was the last consistently good season the Sharks have had.

Even in 2002, we were often pathetic for 40 minutes, giving away huge leads to Manly, StGeorge, Souths, Canberra, and running over sides in the 2nd half. In 2003, we were a 80 minute pathetic side.

Perhaps we are still exorcising the ghost of Ando bred ill discipline and inconsistency?

And finally a kicker that can actually kick goals. Cowboys were the first from team we have played this year and we smashed them. Broncos in 2 weeks will be another good judge on how we will go this year but this year looks very bright considering the last 2 years.

I would like to remind everyone.

No BK no chance.

That said our defence has been very good which is the key to any success with or without BK.

The bopper factor is good too.

After 5 weeks we are doing better than I thought. :D

Concerns for me

right wing
left centre
left side second row
16 and 17

I was very happy to see 4 front rowers this week, it kept us going forward all game.

The best thing is the depth has improved for sure and our Jets partnership has produced something already and at full strength the Jets should be boosted by some first grade quality players.
