Odysseus stared grimly from the prow of of his ship as it cut through the churning Mediterranean Sea. Up ahead he could see the Greek coastline that marked his home and the end of his arduous journey. The remnants of his crew let out a ragged cheer as they too sighted the land - these few brave souls finally feeling that their trials were over.
"There she lies," Odysseus turned to address his crew, "Home. We have done it!"
The cheer rose again and Odysseus allowed himself a rare smile. There were times when he too had feared they would never make it, but now they were a few short knots away from the safety of land. He could not wait to sweep Penelope up in his arms and take her in their marital bed. It had been too long since he had seen her fair face and lay with her in the morning sun.
"I'm afraid things have changed," a stranger's voice shook Odysseus from his daydreams, "Things have changed quite a bit, old man".
He turned to see who the speaker was, but his eyes fell only upon his crew. They gave no indication that they had heard the strange voice. And it had been strange. Greek, to be sure, but some accent he did not know. There was little of the world he had not seen in his long life, and such a mystery bothered him.
"They cannot see me," the voice taunted, again from behind him, "They are not special like you and I. But I'm afraid there's no room for an old timer like you anymore".
Odysseus growled and pulled his sword from it sheath, spinning on his heel and preparing to bury his trusted blade in the interloper's belly. But again, nobody was there. Just the foam tipped waves and the ever growing Greek shoreline.
"Entirely too predictable," the voice mocked him again and as it did, he felt hands against his back, "And you came so close to home".
Odysseus had survived the Cyclops and Scylla. He had survived the War in Troy. It was not meant to end this way. He knew it as surely as he knew that this person was no foreigner. They were from some other when and where. Some foul one.
He thought all of this even as he let out a startled cry and tumbled over the front of the ship, hitting the cold water and disappearing underneath the boat's unforgiving prow an instant later. His crew barely had time to cry out in surprise. Odysseus didn't even have time to scream. The boat's barnacle encrusted hull swept over him and tore him to shreds as surely as any shark's teeth or Persian blade.
His attacker allowed himself a smug, self satisfied grin before whipping away like gossamer on the wind. He had many more worlds to visit and many more 'heroes' to kill.
