Scotland & Wales squads....

Scotland have named eight uncapped players in their 20-man squad for Friday's opening European Championship clash with Wales at Workington.

There are five products of the domestic League with Doncaster full-back David Scott joined by uncapped youngsters Louis Senter and Gregor Ramsay, all three learning the game at Glasgow community club Easterhouse Panthers, plus Edinburgh Eagles teenagers Lewis Clarke and Finn Murphy.

They line up alongside last year's Super League Man of Steel Danny Brough, the Bravehearts' captain, and other heroes of Scotland's amazing 2013 World Cup run to the quarter-finals in Danny Addy, Ben Kavanagh, Alex Hurst, Adam Walker and Workington second rower Brett Phillips.

“As expected, we've had a wonderful welcome back to Workington for the third year,” said coach McCormack after Scotland's Tuesday training session at Workington Zebras RFC.

“It's been good to go back to familiar surroundings in the hotel, the training ground and Derwent Park. We've got seven or eight new lads and they've fitted in really well so I'm excited about Friday night and really looking forward to it.”

There are potential new caps in Canterbury Bulldogs fullback Nathan Massey and three Super League youngsters in London Broncos half back Oscar Thomas, Wakefield forward Corbyn Kilday and teenager Sonny Esslemont from Hull Kingston Rovers.

Most of the squad is aged between 19 and 25 as Scotland build towards the 2017 World Cup. Prop Sam Barlow was ruled out with injury on Tuesday having helped Leigh Centurions to the Championship title in a gruelling season that only ended 10 days ago.

Scotland have named London Broncos teenage centre Harvey Burnett, a stand-out in Scotland U19s' Commonwealth Championship side this summer, on stand-by. “There are one or two lads with injuries who we need to monitor over these next two days and Harvey has been fantastic in training so we are keeping him with us as he may be needed,” added McCormack.
New Wales coach John Kear has named 11 potential debutants in his line-up and, if they all get selected, Wales will hit 500 players in their history.

Daniel Fleming is the lone Super League player in a youthful line-up that will be captained by Peter Lupton on his home ground.

Almost half of the 20 play their rugby in Wales with seven coming from South Wales Scorpions and two from North Wales Crusaders, something that Kear is pleased to see.

“I'm excited,” he said. “I keep banging on about this but it's the true Welshness in this team that excites me. We've got so many homegrown players in the squad and that's testament to the development work that goes on in this country.”

“This Scotland game will be a real yardstick as to where we are. What I am certain is that this group of players will be totally committed to the shirt and their country.”

There is added incentive for the Dragons that victory in the tournament would see them qualify for the 2017 World Cup.

Owain Griffiths of the Crusaders is one of the potential debutants, as are Jordan Sheridan, Kyle Scrivens, Connor Farrer, Paul Emanuelli, Phil Carleton and Morgan Evans from South Wales Scorpions.

Coventry Bears’ Tom Hughes, Gateshead Thunder’s Ricky Hough, Oxford’s Yannic Parker and Gloucestershire All Golds’ Izaak Duffy are the other players in line to win their first Welsh cap.

Wales have a slight edge over Scotland in previous games having won four out of the seven encounters between the two countries.

Did they give any reasons? It just doesn't make sense!

Local press (I assume) giving some time to the Scottish lads.

Real shame we won't get to see any coverage of these games but hopefully in years to come this will not be the case.

(Also a shame there is no merchandise to buy. A European Championship 2014 T-shirt would be a nice addittion to my summer wardrobe !)

Scots determined to develop some league stars of their own

David Scott was the only homegrown player to force his way into the Scotland team that contested last year's World Cup quarter-final but he is excited for a quartet of fellow youngsters who have the chance to emulate that achievement.

The 21-year-old, originally a product of Stirling County who learned league at Easterhouse Panthers, showed what can happen after being a late call-up into the World Cup squad and is hoping his example can inspire Louis Senter, Gregor Ramsay, Lewis Clarke and Finn Murphy who have all been given a taste of involvement with the senior squad ahead of the European Championships which get underway this week.
"We're just picking up where we left off last year," Scott said, as the squad re-gathered. "We've got 12 or 13 of the World Cup squad back together - that's the core of the group - and we've added to that with some younger players which should stand us in good stead.
"It's really exciting seeing the new players come in - hopefully we'll see the team of the future on Friday night. The first thing Steve [McCormack, the head coach] said to us at training was, 'This is the first step to prepare for the 2017 World Cup.'
"A lot of us younger players have been playing first team rugby in Super League or the Championship for the last year or two now so we've been playing with a much greater physicality and at a higher speed than reserve or academy rugby."
That is the most positive way of looking at a situation which has resulted in injury and suspension depriving Scotland of the entire contingent of Australian NRL players who played such a major part for them at the World Cup. They are, though, in the right hands, since McCormack, who is marking a decade in charge of the Scotland team, has just been recruited by the most successful organisation in the sport, Wigan Warriors, to take on a leading role at his hometown club in youth and coach development.
As ever, he is looking as much to the future as the present by giving that quartet of youngsters the chance to show what they can do and to sample the senior environment. He notes they can only benefit from working alongside vastly experienced Super League players like the captain Danny Brough, Ben Kavanagh and Joe Wardle.
"We did this with Davie Scott three years ago and look how far he's come since then," McCormack said. "Hopefully these lads will do the same. Louis has shown he can cope with a step up this season and one or two of them could make the final squad."
Ramsay, 19, who is from Alloa, and Senter, 20, whose father Mark has been the driving force behind the club, are both products of Easterhouse Panthers, while Clarke, 19, from Bonnyrigg, and Murphy, 18, a Heriot's FP who is a relatively recent convert to league, caught the eye at the Commonwealth Under-19 Championships in Cumbernauld, where Scotland drew with Australia and beat England.
They are unlikely to feature in the championship matches which begin in what became something of a home from home for the Scots in Workington last autumn, with their meeting with Wales on Friday evening, but the three teenagers are also all in the Scotland under-19 squad that has two games during the same window.
With more than 50 per cent of that under-19 squad comprising home-based players from Aberdeen Warriors, Ayrshire Storm, Edinburgh Eagles and Easterhouse Panthers, they will meet their Irish counterparts in a curtain-raiser to the European Championship encounter between Scotland and Ireland in Dublin on March 25 and England Lionhearts at Edinburgh University on November 1, the day after the senior team completes its campaign against France in Galashiels.

There are about 5 SL players in Scotalnds Squad. who could be considered SL regulars The likes of Esselmont (HKR) have been on loan all year in C1 at gateshead.

Too much is being made of the players not available (the same players who failed miserabley at the WC) to Wales. Once again the Welsh squad contains more young welsh players who can add to the pool of players who we all know are capable.

Score is now 42 - 18 to Scotland. Weather is apparently terrible, bucketing rain and strong winds.

be good to see Scotland in the 4 Nations in 2016. The concept has been great having a 4th team in there and as we have seen over the past few years it has been pretty tight below Eng, Aus and NZ looking forward to seeing the 4th Nation knock off one of the big three very soon..
