Well, he's sure being paid like a 6 now... so he'd better start involving himself like one, if the team's going to get it's value out of him.

yeah, I mean, in a lacklustre side he is the only bloke who looks like being a threat when we've got the ball....

strengths and weaknesses are opinions. apparently we moved a strength when we moved burt out of the number 1 jumper last season. some people love living in the past

'He already plays like a 5/8 but without having to tackle' - seems to be a popular opinion here. I'd rather move him because he is useless positionally and usually shows no urgency to retrieve kicks.

We are often on the back foot early in sets because Hayne cruises and our first tackle is about 10-15m behind what a normal fullback would get the ball to. He can be dangerous bringing the ball back but how often is that? most of the time he jogs back, slowly picks up the ball, jogs to the defensive line and meekly surrenders. He will only bring it back hard or fast if he spots a gap.

Since he started to really play like a 5/8 in attack he doesn't back up as much as he used to, fullbacks should always be running alongside forwards, or anyone running with the ball, he rarely does that now. Look at Slater, he does it all the time and it leads to a lot of Melbourne's tries.

So IMO if he is going to play like a 5/8 he should have the 6 jersey on with a fullback in the team that is going to play as fullback. Hayne shouldn't be back there just so he doesn't have to tackle, then step up when we have the ball like a quarterback. It's effectively weakening the 1 and 6 just to accommodate him.

The only problem is though, if he was moved to 5/8 he'd spit the dummy again and just go through the motions like last time to force the coach to move him back to fullback.

Another reason Hayne will eventually move to 5/8 is his speed. Due to his size I reckon in 2-4 seasons he just wont be quick enough to play full back forcing the move to 5/8

Iv had this thought about Hayne for a while. He does not have a complete skill set for any position except for the wing.

Fullback and center he struggles with positional play, five eight he lacks organisational skills. But his effectiveness at fullback is too much to throw away. He does to many good things to deserve to be moved.

At five eight yeah, perhaps in the future if it suits him. But its unfair to expect a similar transition like Lockyer. Lockyer had heaps of support and the right people around him to make it happen, and it still took a bit over a year for him to feel comfortable there. And thats Darren bloody Lockyer.

Jarryd can do it, but it would take a hell of alot of hard work for him to do it properly, and he would only be considered successful there if he ends up playing better then he did at fullback. Big ask, one that cant be forced upon him, he has to take it up himself.

The best players in the modern era have been 5/8ths and halfbacks. Hayne when focused can do it all. Tonight showed me all the more reason why he will eventually be our 6, especially if Mateo leaves. Maybe not this year but eventually he will be told that the 6 jersey is his destiny and he will listen.

maybe....possibly.....

he certainly doesn't seem bothered with his defence and positioning duties at fullback currently......

Well Hayne is a poor fullback, he is a great attacking weapon, but really poor for his overall fullback play.

People may say Dally M this or that, whatever. He never won the Dally M with his fullback play, he won that due to just an outstanding attacking ability but there is more to fullback than that.

The stuff he does in attack he could easily do from 5/8, maybe even centre if you switched someone out there when we had the ball. As said before though he'd spit the dummy and give up like he did last time.

Maybe have him defend on the wing, then stick Reddy on the wing when we have the ball so Hayne could move infield for his roaming or 5/8 duties. He was a great defender on the wing, but when he was moved to centre and 5/8 he gave up and didn't care and started whinging to get the fullback spot.

Go back and watch some of Billy Slater's first season at fullback - had some absolute shockers. I recall people ridiculing him endlessly.

Hayne has barely played a full season at fullback and he's already won the Dally M medal.

He's going to get better and better the longer he plays there.

agreed, but should he have the ball in hand more often???

and would this take him away from worrying about his positioning at fullback??? he seems distracted at times worrying about that.....

I think the problem is that he's trying to do too much.

We've become a little too predictable going to him on the 5th for the big play all the time.

We need more points of attack.

IMO if he wants to play like a 5/8 then take the 6 jersey, shut up and play there. He wants to hang out at the back being lazy but then step up when we have the ball, like a quarterback or something.

If he wants to be fullback then he needs to study some tape of great fullbacks or something to learn the position. Maybe Ando needs to bring in a fullback coach like some former great fullback. Also he needs to back up the forwards, follow them for offloads, he rarely does that anymore because he thinks he's a 5/8.

So it's one or the other, he shouldn't be wasting 2 positions by trying to be both when it's not possible.

totally, if he wants to play in the halves, then play there - who is going to argue with him??? but if not, play like a fullback and let the halves do their thing!?!?
