PARRAMATTA powerbrokers have opened negotiations to extend the contract of coach Stephen Kearney.
While talks are in their embryonic stages, it's understood that an extension of up to three years - a tenure that would keep the New Zealand mentor at the Eels until the end of 2016 - has been discussed.
The Sun-Herald can reveal that Eels chief executive Paul Osborne approached the board - which was unanimously re-elected at last month's League's club elections - with the proposal to tie up Kearney long term. The directors, wanting to create stability at a club that has parted company early with its past three coaches - Brian Smith, Michael Hagan and Daniel Anderson - gave Osborne the green light to proceed.

In his first season as a head coach, Kearney has overseen a Parramatta side that has clocked up just four wins, one draw and eight losses to sit 12th on the ladder coming into round 16. However, performances have improved over the past month and the club is unlucky to have escaped with a draw and a loss in matches against premiership heavyweights St George Illawarra and Manly.
While results so far have been modest, Eels officials have been impressed with the way Kearney is building for the future. They have pointed to his establishment of an academy to identify, educate and retain junior talent; his ability to attract players such as Chris Sandow; his apprenticeship under Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett; and his success with the Kiwis' outfit. Officials also noted that Kearney was keenly sought by several clubs before agreeing to join Parramatta.
''Everyone has seen the impact he's having on the club and the football team,'' a source said. ''Kearney coming here has made it easier for us to get high-profile players and the kids want to come and play for him too. The players are responding to him and things are going to turn for us. But it's not just the short term, he's got a long-term vision for the club and we want him to see that through.''
In a profession that offers little job security, an extended deal is a huge show of faith in a man in his rookie season as an NRL head coach. Last week Matthew Elliott was sacked despite being contracted until the end of the season, while Bulldogs counterpart Kevin Moore also needs improved results to see out the remaining 18 months of his contract. Few coaches have the security of extended deals, with Titans coach John Cartwright and Newcastle-bound Bennett - both signed until the end of 2016 - the exception, not the norm.
However, there will be some changes to the Eels' coaching staff next season. Long-serving physical performance co-ordinator Hayden Knowles will step down from his role to concentrate on his business interests. Knowles, who brought Usain Bolt to Australia last year through his company Competitive Edge, also trains high-profile athletes including Danny Green, Dani Samuels and Fabrice Lapierre.
While Osborne wouldn't comment on negotiations with Kearney, he said of Knowles: ''His contribution to the club has been enormous and it will be a sad day for everybody when he finishes up. Hayden is well regarded.''

Just out of curiosity, what would most of our board know about building a successful club and team?

Are they impressed because he came from Melbourne and they are good, therefore he must be?

They certainly can't be impressed by our on field performances......

Let the attacking begin.......

 Here we go, fancy wanting stability and a plan at the club. As much as I liked and respected Ando he didn't seem to have a plan to dig us out if this mess. And if the board are looking to tie up SK longterm the club might have snared another big name for next season??

Results are meager at the moment but we are where we were two yrs ago with a completely inferior roster. Most people were happy to give Ando time with a team he didn't create why not SK???

Because some forumers expected immediate results from sk!

I'm happy with what he's done so far. Players here now who will b there next year will excel under kearey and be better for it next year.

He has got time... another two and a half years to prove himself as a head coach. But his contract should certainly not be extended now. Let's see how results pan out over this year and then next year before making such a rash move. You don't extend a rookie coaches contract by 3 years when he's not even halfway through his first year of CURRENT 3 year deal. Especially when results have been mediocre. Overall I think this article is BS though, and also hope it is.

Well this just tells me that SK has signed one or two superstars and the club is satisfied with his magnetic power to draw in the best.
Now just who are these players.... SBW???? Cameron Smith???? Cooper someone????
Lets just wait and see.
There is no way they would be signing up SK for 6 years straight UNLESS
the great players coming have stipulated they will only play for Parra while SK is coach!!!!

Hhhhmmmm:-k:-k:-k

I was in the he sucks camp but I can see what he is trying to build now with the signings and the on field attitude. The Eels have always been soft when the going got tough and Kearney is trying to address that.

I've been pleased with the last 4 weeks.

We played well under other coaches for 4 weeks at a time though....

Having said that, Kearney is clearly not a "dud" coach, and I agree with creating some stability - a 5 year term will see a 'club development' methodology in place. We'll start to see a longer term plan than we've had the last 5 years (where we've had 5 different coaches...)

Big test for Kearney is to see what he can do next year with a halfback!

Results mustn't have anything to do with the extension. Ffs he still has 2.5 years remaining, that is more then enough time.

The article needs some good editing, in regard to being able to attract good players like sandow. Sandow came for the $$$$$$, and if our offer was anything like souths, I'm sure he would of stay there.

Want an absolute joke of a decision.

There is only a couple of coaches that deserve to have contracts through to 2016 and at this early stage SK is not one of them.

while I think SK is doing OK, I think any talk of a contract extension at this stage is a bit premature unless there is something like significant player signings that we are unaware of

Smacks of panic by an inexperienced board. What has he done that Ando didn't anyway ?

Good decision by the board.

Kearney was brought to the club to instil a new attitude and culture, and while none of us are on the inside seeing the changes made, the board would be well aware of how the mentality of the squad has turned around under Kearney.
