Forum Sevens 2007 season preview
The sixth season of the F7s kicks off today with eight teams set to compete over the coming season. It promises to be a cracker of year as we welcome two new teams, the Ninjas and the Cougars, into the Forum Sevens Competition.
Teams and notes:
Parramatta Eels
The reigning premiers who set the benchmark in 2006.
Can the Eels make it back-to-back premierships? History shows that teams tend to fall off the perch after taking out the big one. But a quick scan of the Eels line up shows that they have what it takes to go all the way again in 2007.
Second-placed in the BP Players Awards of 2006, Bubbles is keen to go another season in team of champions which simply oozes class. The Eels have lost a couple of forummers over the off-season with The Colonel being a notable addition to the referee ranks. But they have gained the services of former Pirates Brycey and Prince Charles and former Eels skipper Natalie's Daddy (aka Dvdhntr aka ParraDaze aka The Ref in Seat 196) has made a return to the F7s.
The Eels still have room under the cap to build up into a strong outfit over the coming season.
Pre-season squad (11 players so far):
1. filthy_spammers
2. Bubbles
3. blackfriday
4. Vaealikis Girl (c)

Gamebreakers: Bubbles, eloquentEEL, Bartman, Goleel

Early bookies mail: Too hot to handle.
Newtown Bluebags
The 2006 runners-up and the team that everyone loves to beat.
The Bluebags have recruited well early in the off-season and looked primed to give the F7s a real shake in 2007. Lured out of retirement are veterans Gorilla and Everlovin' Antichrist who no doubt will form a lethal combination in the season ahead. Meanwhile the core of the 2006 Baggers squad still seems to be intact in a team which welcomes former Warriors star Polar Bob as well as F7s debutant Dave Q to the Marrickville sheds.
Pre-season squad (13 players so far):

Bring back John Fifita

Early bookies mail: Almost too hot to handle but we'll give you 5-4.
Penrith Panthers
Is this the year of the Panther?
The early mail is that the Panthers have been busy recruiting and are going to be hard to toss in 2007. LeagueNut is back and set for another big year which saw him rise up to third place in the 2006 BP Player's Awards. Meanwhile Big Mick takes the reigns again with former Sharks captain Waken joining him in the front office.
Overall, the Panthers have put together a sensational squad where youth and experience meet head on.
Pre-season squad (12 players so far):
1. Azkatro
2. Big Mick
3. Madunit
4. [Furrycat]
5. Leaguenut
6. Big Pete
7. Sea Eagle Scuba

Early bookies mail: Warm favourites and a punter's delight at 3-1.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Semi-finalists in 2006, the Rabbitohs have put together a strong squad in their quest to win their maiden F7s premiership.
With Pistol at the helm, the lads from Redfern have assembled a classy backline with nqboy, Bumble and Master Vippo looking eager to carve a ditch in the turf. Meanwhile the likes of Crusher and Clevo will cart it up all day and my mail is that Souths are set for a big season.
Pre-season squad (11 players so far):
Pistol (c)
Master Vippo
Clevo
Crusher
Franko
Olympic Park
nqboy
Seano
rabs
Bumble
no.2_lukeburt
Gamebreakers: Master Vippo, Clevo, Crusher, Olympic Park
Home ground: Redfern Oval
Early bookies mail: 4-1 but these odds won't last. Definite dark horse material.
Newcastle Knights
The Knights can take a lot from 2006.
As semi-finalists, the Novacastrians gave other teams plenty to think about and they look set to be competitive again in 2007. With CWBush cracking the whip, the Knights look likely to assemble a similar squad to the one that gained fifth place in 2006.
2006 players (no 2007 squad officially named as yet):
skeptic ghost
MrCharisma
CWBush (c)
PrideKnight
Hutty1986

Red and Blue Knight
Parki
Gene Krupa

djmac
Gamebreakers: PrideKnight, MrCharisma, les norton, CWBush
Home ground: Energy Australia Stadium
Early bookies mail: 5-1 and a team to watch.
New Zealand Warriors
The Warriors debut year unearthed some stars of the future with Jesbass taking out the BP Players Awards of 2006.
Just missing out on the semi-finals berth last year, the Robster-led Warriors look set to improve on their standings this year. With plenty of room under the cap, its still a little early to call, but the Warriors do seem to have brought together a solid core of players and look every chance to go all the way in 2007.
Pre-season squad (9 players so far):
jesbass (vc)
Robster (c)
mxmstereece
byrne_rovelli82
Keepingthefaith
mad kiwi elloco bandido
Enterfien
fiamacho
warriors4life
Gamebreakers: Jesbass, KeepingtheFaith, mxmstereece, mad kiwi elloco bandido
Home ground: Mt Smart Stadium
Early bookies mail: 6-1 and outsiders but look likely to prove the bookies wrong. A good each way bet.
Chuck Norris Texas Death Ninjas
The pretty boys of the competition who are launching into their debut season in the F7s.
Risng up following an impressive series of trial matches, the Ninjas stocks are further enhanced with the inclusion of a number of former Raiders to their ranks.
With more standouts than you can shake a stick at, its hard to go past the likes of Thickos, edabomb and Raider_69 when assessing the Ninjas chances for the season ahead. The squad has a very classy mix with numerous gamebreakers and rising stars making up the team list.
With every player outside of the top three being awarded the vice captaincy and a new set of steak knives, the incentive is there for the Ninjas to make every post a winner in 2007.
Pre-season squad (15 players):
13. Paulquinn49 (c)
20. edabomb (c)
1. Titties (c)
2. Azzman (vc)
3. Les Amber (vc)
16. Freddo (vc)
5. Tokyo Raider (vc)
7. Dubby (vc)
6. Schifty (vc)
81. jamesgould (vc)
8. Raider_69 (vc)
9. Thickos (vc)
10. Bernie Lomax (vc)
11. Goldielocks (vc)
12. Millwall (vc)
Gamebreakers: Thickos, Raider_69, edabomb, Schifty
Home ground: Reliant Stadium
Early bookies mail: After a mystery punter laid out a six figure amount, the Ninjas are short odds to make the semis.
The Cougars
A new team, the Cougars formed out of the Sharks and the Lions over the off-season.
Are the Cougars set for a resurgence styled on the Phoenix rising from the ashes? Or are they set to become the F7s battlers of 2007? Only time will tell.
An impressive trial match gave us a clue with a number of players taking the field to get the captain's nod for the opening round.
While they're still finding their feet, the Cougars do seem to have assembled a solid bunch with Lions Player of the Year Steel Dragon looking a cert to run the hard yards again in 2007.
Pre-season players (no 2007 squad officially named as yet):
IanG
Locky_Jr
lockyno1
Choc Soldier
