Sonny Fai's family are likely to receive more than $500,000 in an insurance payment from the National Rugby League.
The Sunday Star-Times understands a payment is imminent following the presumed death of the promising Warriors' second-rower, who has been missing, presumed drowned, since he was caught in a rip at Bethell's Beach on January 4.
At current exchange rates, the before-tax payment would be around NZ$630,000, with insurers working out the tax ramifications of the payment.
The policy, which covers the top 25 players in each club's squad, is a recent innovation as part of the league's agreement with the players' union, the Rugby League Players' Association.
An NRL spokesman told the Sunday Star-Times: "In our last collective bargaining agreement [with the players' association] we agreed there would be an insurance policy of coverage of up to $A500,000 death cover."
The Warriors declined to comment and RLPA chief executive Matt Rodwell did not return calls.
Last week, Warriors centre Brent Tate said the team would have a season-long reminder of Fai on their jerseys. "With our jerseys this year we've got his signature and his Warriors number above our heart ... he's a part of our squad for 2009 and he'll never be forgotten."
The Warriors open their season on March 14 at home against Parramatta.
