Favourite TV themes

I didn't watch much TV in the 80s. Consequently, tend to prefer 70s themes. Not too keen either on mainstream 80s music production.

Jan Hammer's Miami Vice theme is a shining exception. Can imagine tuning in to hear it, then tuning straight back out when the programme starts.

A wildly popular theme tune is a mixed blessing. Has the potential to overshadow the show itself. Like when an ad jingle catches on but hardly anyone remembers the product.

Ayshea is the first SHADO HQ officer seen in the title sequence. She was an early crush for many of us in the 70s. Alongside her singing career and bit-part acting, she presented a children's TV pop show called "Lift Off With Ayshea". Filmed at Granada studios in Manchester.

Typing "Lift Off" into YouTube brings forth a deluge of episodes from a more recent Aussie show.

Jan Hammers pieces (both the opening track and those he wrote for each episode) are a big part of what made Vice such a great show. However, the shows true strength came from the actors and the writing. If you want to see some truly brilliant television, check out the episode from Season 1 called Evan (Season 1 Ep 21). To this day it's still one of the greatest episodes of any TV series I've ever seen. The bonus is that the Jan Hammer track for that episode is also the best one he wrote.

Another great episode is Season 2 Episode 11 Phil The Shill. The Phil in the title is Phil Collins in one of his earliest acting roles.
