Results

New England Celtic v Shenzhen Sharkitohs

New England and Shenzhen, two of the FFBRL's traditional powerhouses, have started the season with a bang in front of a big Tamworth crowd. With both sides having fought it out for last year's minor premiership, it was Shenzhen who had the best start with tries to Sam McKendry and Gerard Beale opening up a 12-0 halftime scoreline. A much invigorated New England returned fire with tries to Josh Dugan and Josh Jackson in the second half, and looked to have snatched victory when Danny Brough knocked over a late field goal. The sting came in the tail though, with Lachlan Coote equalising moments out from full-time to start the season off with a 13-13 draw.

New England: Josh Jackson and Josh Dugan. Brough 2/3. Brough 1 fg.
Shenzhen: Sam McKendry and Gerard Beale. Johnson 2/2. Coote 1 fg.
HT Score: 0-12
Dally M: Danny Houghton (Celtic) 3, Josh Dugan (Celtic) 2, and Danny Brough (Celtic) 1.
Crowd: 30,323

Raymond Terrace Tanks v Grapes of Nanking

A record crowd was in attendance in the Hunter earlier this afternoon as a new look Raymond Terrace looked to score first blood in their clash with the Grapes of Nanking. Leading 12-8 at the break, Raymond Terrace found themselves the target of a Korbin Sims wrecking ball as the bench forward made a huge impact for the visitors and guided them to a 20-14 come from behind victory to open their account.

Raymond Terrace: Michael Gordon and Luke Gale. Gordon 3/3
Nanking: Sam Perrett, Jamie Soward, and Joel Tomkins. Hodkinson 4/4
HT Score: 12-8
Dally M: Korbin Sims (Grapes) 3, Wade Graham (Tanks) 2, and Michael Gordon (Tanks) 1.
Crowd: 36,241

Mu'a Saints v Ponte Preta Billy Goats

The grand final rematch lived up to all of the hype today, and a huge crowd in Mu'a were on hand to see the Saints score a measure of revenge against last year's fairytale premiers. Up 14-6 at half-time, the Saints extended their lead to 20-12 shortly after the break and looked in control until Zeb Taia's 77th minute try brought it within two. The Bilyl Goats threw it all at the home side, but Mu'a held firm to score a moral victory and an all important two points.

Mu'a: Pat Richards 2 and Kane Linnett. Richards 4/4
Ponte Preta: Krisnan Inu, Daniel Tupou, and Zeb Taia. Inu 3/3
HT Score: 14-6
Dally M: Ratu Marika Koroibete (Saints) 3, Josh Morris (Saints) 2, and Pat Richards (Saints) 1.
Crowd: 33,670

South Canberra Knights v Roma Vandali

A star-studded Roma Vandali have sent a warning shot across the bows of their FFBRL rivals today with a comprehensive 36-18 victory over an equally strong South Canberra outfit. The Italian side looked a cut above their opposition throughout, leading 24-12 at half-time and confidently closing out the game in a less open second half.

South Canberra: Jermaine McGilvray, Curtis Rona, and Matty Smith. Smith 3/3
Roma: Darius Boyd, Jack Reed, Ben Hunt, Johnathon Thurston, and Tom Symonds 2. Thurston 6/7
HT Score: 12-24
Dally M: James Roby (Vandali) 3, Johnathon Thurston (Vandali) 2, and Ben Hunt (Vandali) 1.
Crowd: 39,885

Brisbane Bulls v Ipswich Reds

The game between the high-flying Bulls and the underdog Reds certainly looked to be going to script after the home side dominated a lop-sided first half to lead little brother 26-8, but Bossert's half-time spray must have had an effect as a much improved Reds outfit came out to play in a much more competitive second half. While they lacked the firepower to overturn the half-time deficit, the Reds made a game of it and ultimately went down 26-18.

Brisbane: Tom Trbojevic, Anthony Milford 2, Matt Moylan, and Trent Merrin. Reynolds 3/5.
Ipswich: Justin O'Neill 2 and Joel Monaghan. Brooks 3/3
HT Score: 26-6
Dally M: Anthony Milford (Bulls) 3, Alex Glenn (Bulls) 2, and Trent Merrin (Bulls) 1.
Crowd: 16,832

Sydney Vipers v Quahog Quagmires

Goal-kicking and discipline have proved the difference in today's clash between Sydney and Quahog, with both tries able to bag a pair of tries but Quahog able to capitalize in a 7-3 penalty count to cruise to an 18-12 win on the road.

The visitors held a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime, but found it winnowed away by a much improved Sydney in the second stanza. Only the goal-kicking of James Maloney proved enough to get the American club home.

Sydney: Ben Barba and Steve Matai. Croker 2/2
Quahog: Aiden Guerra and James Roberts. Maloney 5/6
HT Score: 0-14
Dally M: Edrick Lee (Quagmires) 3, James Roberts (Quagmires) 2, and Steve Matai (Vipers) 1.
Crowd: 21,871

Mt. Disappointment RLFC v Perth Reds

The new kids on the FFBRL block have made a winning start to their existence today in a tense affair playing host to Perth. The sides were nearly impossible to separate in an open first half, with the home side up 12-10. As the game wound towards its conclusion, Mt. Disappointment were anything but as they held out and finished with a pair of penalty goals to secure a 22-16 win.

Mt. Disappointment: Kieran Foran, Aiden Sezer, and Jack Bird. Sezer 5/5
Perth: Shaun Kenny-Dowell, Simon Mannering, and Tyson Frizzel. Roberts 2/4
HT Score: 12-10
Dally M: Simon Mannering (Reds) 3, Aiden Sezer (Mt. Disappointment) 2, and Paul Vaughan (Mt. Disappointment) 1.
Crowd: 26,432

First trip for Happy Badger to M'ua...and Badger's record against Mu'a is 1-1 (lost at Melbourne, as Scoregasms, in regular season)...

...interesting nugget from the FFBRL Statistical Quango and Tiki Bar...Ponte Preta lost two games last year after Happy Badger took over the team, and both losses were avenged in the playoffs, in classic, nail-gnawing fashion...
