I'm not a fan of Rovelli, but I've definitely noticed his consistent improvement over the last few weeks. Some interesting stats surrounding our playmaking this season, covering tries, try assists, line breaks, and line break assists, which are probably the most important aspects of the halves roles can be found below. I've only included players who have started in the halves - not those who have come on from the bench - to ensure that it's the halves I'm exclusively looking at.

Player: Matches In The Halves / Tries (Avg) / Try Assists (Avg) / Line Breaks (Avg) / Line Break Assists (Avg)
Grant Rovelli: 16 / 1 (0.063) / 13 (0.813) / 1 (0.063) / 7 (0.438)
Nathan Fien: 7 / 1 (0.143) / 4 (0.571) / 1 (0.143) / 0 (0.000)
Michael Witt: 9 / 2 (0.222) / 4 (0.444) / 1 (0.111) / 2 (0.222)
Jerome Ropati: 1 / 0 (0.000) / 0 (0.000) / 0 (0.000) / 0 (0.000)

Other names that have been mentioned...

Player: Matches In The Halves / Tries (Avg) / Try Assists (Avg) / Line Breaks (Avg) / Line Break Assists (Avg)
Mathew Head: 10 / 1 (0.100) / 11 (1.100) / 3 (0.300) / 7 (0.700)
Eddie Paea: 2 / 1 (0.500) / 1 (0.500) / 2 (1.000) / 0 (0.000)
Joel Moon: 1 / 1 (1.000) / 0 (0.000) / 1 (1.000) / 0 (0.000)
Liam Foran: Has not started any NRL matches in the halves.

So if we were to break that down into each stat, orderd by highest average first...

Tries:
Joel Moon (1.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Eddie Paea (0.500) - but only two matches to judge in 2008
Michael Witt (0.222)
Nathan Fien (0.143)
Mathew Head (0.100)
Grant Rovelli (0.063)
Jerome Ropati (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Liam Foran (insufficient data)

Try Assists:
Grant Rovelli (0.813)
Nathan Fien (0.571)
Eddie Paea (0.500) - but only two matches to judge in 2008
Michael Witt (0.444)
Mathew Head (0.100)
Joel Moon (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Jerome Ropati (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Liam Foran (insufficient data)

Line Breaks:
Eddie Paea (1.000) - but only two matches to judge in 2008
Joel Moon (1.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Mathew Head (0.300)
Nathan Fien (0.143)
Michael Witt (0.111)
Grant Rovelli (0.100)
Jerome Ropati (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Liam Foran (insufficient data)

Line Break Assists:
Mathew Head (0.700)
Grant Rovelli (0.438)
Michael Witt (0.222)
Nathan Fien (0.000)
Eddie Paea (0.000) - but only two matches to judge in 2008
Jerome Ropati (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Joel Moon (0.000) - but only one match to judge in 2008
Liam Foran (insufficient data)

It all looks pretty inconclusive to me, except to say that Grant Rovelli isn't easily our worst option in the halves, especially if you look at how he has performed over the last three weeks:

Grant Rovelli: 3 matches, 0 tries, 6 try assists, 0 line breaks, 3 line break assists
Nathan Fien: 3 matches, 1 try, 1 try assist, 1 line break, 0 line break assists

And I'm not a fan of Grant's.

I agree, but the real prob I have with Ravs-and I've stuck up for him in the past often, is that he is so hot and cold. When he's good, he is...but when he's bad, wow, he's awful. And if you're a 'paint by numbers' kinda player without the razzle dazzle, you really need to be consistant. And he hasn't been.

That said, he's clearly a great guy with a good attitude, really tries his heart out...so I just really want him to do well, I really do

Well, according to the paper today, Witt will be given the same deal as Fien this week. Apparently his manager already has the feelers out in the ESL

The quality of halves will be very low next season if this turns out to be the case, and the depth even worse

Announcing that Moon was the number 6 has turned out to be a masterstroke!

Wooden spoon is heading across the Tasman for 2009.

Don't forget Cleary has two buddies. What Ropati added to todays game I don't know.

Things will be cleared up when Lance Hohaia moves to the #14 jersey and our favourite full-back returns to the #1 jersey.

Hohaia gives us flexibility as he can play fullback, in the centres at a pinch, and at dummy-half.

Fai is exactly what the Warriors have been missing since the golden days of Ali, Clinton and Meli (apart from Manu and perhaps Wade) - this being a go to man on attack. We need to use him more as he breaks tackles, can score tries and committs 2-3 defenders. He just needs to develop a bettrer undersatnding with Mannering and not be subbed off.
