FIJI NSW ISP TEAM
Press Release

Petero Civoniceva today proudly announced, “After years of careful consideration to get this project off the ground by 2019, we have chosen a new interim CEO to lead this project. Tia Roko will lead the team as the CEO in getting the project solidly set up and leading the way for us until we have a new board to commence advertising and looking for a person we see best to lead us into the future. I have always believed in being innovative in business strategies and I believe Tia Roko is the best fit for us in moving forward. Tia has a background in developing organisational strategy and sound governance. She has expertise in engagement across sectors and working with boards to ensure organisations and businesses are compliant in their governance and strategically placed to be the best they can be. I am proud to announce: she is of Fijian background and the first Fijian born woman, to lead a Rugby League Club from the Pacific. Her role will be to helps us to set up the back end of our business including the recruitment of a solid and strategic board of directors, as well as setting up compliance mechanisms to allow us to operate in Fiji and in Australia.

We will be announcing our Board, Operations and Coaching staff in the next few days, as we prepare the team to compete in 2019. I ask that all our supporters show their support by working with us and support our revenue raising strategies in the next few months. We have been told we cannot get this project off the ground- but I and my team believe we can. This is not about us- this is about community as I have always believed. This is also about facilitating opportunities for Rugby League players from across our beautiful islands of Fiji. Our first event is June 8th, 2018, and we will be launching the team name and apparels at this event. I thank all those who have put up their hand in support, and those who have continued to support us in this journey.”

Purchase your tickets and support the first Pacific team to enter into the NSW ISP Cup. We encourage people to head over to the event page and purchase your tickets for an amazing night of entertainment and networking. Let’s make this dream come true!

Is this 100% happening next year? Last I heard they had secured the necessary sponsorship but there is no team name and even the article hints at a little doubt about the project

Png, fiji.... get tonga, soma and 4 NZ teams and make a Pacific League

I think in reality this league wouldn't be commercially viable and the playing standard wouldn't be as strong as the QLD or NSW Cup so it would defeat the purpose.

I like you idea though of including the whole of the Pacific under the NRL umbrella as it is already the go-to-league for RL talent in our part of the world. I would like the NRL to work with the RLIF, APRLC, NZRL, TonganRL, SamoanRL, PNGRL and FijiRL to deliver the following long term:

  • Semi-pro league setup in NZ using the Auckland RL as the base (like NRL did with Sydney)
  • Second NZ team into the NSW cup (with eventual promotion to the NRL)
  • Fiji to NSW Cup (happening next year I believe)
  • RLIF, APRLC, NRL to work with NZRL to invest and build the strength of the NZ league to get it up to (or as close to) NSW / QLD Cup strength as possible (this may take time admittedly)
  • Once the league is at sufficient strength to stand as our third teir 2 comp in the region then add a the pacific nation clubs to it (Tongan and Samoan team may have to be NZ based to be viable but could bring the best of the domestic talent over to be part of the squad)
Once this setup is achieved - we have the major Pacific nations playing under one umbrella / system. With pathways from the big six nations from amateur domestic, to semi-pro then through to the NRL. This should help all nation's with participation in domestic leagues, will help all nation's national team (as they are actually producing home-grown talent that is not eligible for another nation and good for the NRL as it helps with the talent issue when the are looking to expand.
