Fiji announces National Women’s Club competition, the Marama Cup

The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) has announced its plans for its domestic national Women’s club competition in 2021.

The competition, which is based upon the NRL’s Telstra Women’s Premiership, will feature four club teams initially and will operate above some of the regional programmes run by various FNRL clubs and the Fiji Origin series.

Named the Marama Cup, the competition will run parallel to the Fiji Vodafone Cup competition.

FNRL acting chief executive officer Don Natabe announced that the competition will have a soft launch in 2021 before looking to grow in the following seasons.

“It will be of similar format to the NRLW competition,” Natabe said.

“We are looking for sponsors which is quite challenging given this COVID-19 pandemic affecting the economy.

“We are calling for sponsors to come on board to help in the development of women’s rugby league in Fiji.”

In 2020 both the USP Raiders and Vusu Raiders have conducted competitive matches for Women in their districts, whilst the Fiji National Rugby League coordinated a three match Women’s Origin series between Eastern State and Western State.
