The Lebanese rugby league national team is gearing up to defend the Hayne-Mannah Cup in the three-tier clash at Remondis Stadium, Sydney on 19 October 2014. The clash will mark the start of a four-year journey for newly appointed Head of Performance Darren Maroun, who will personally lead the Cedars while overseeing an under-16s side coached by Charbel Khoury and Tarek Houcher’s under-20s. Unlike the inaugural event in 2013, when Lebanon played against Fiji-Australia, this match has been sanctioned by the RLIF and will receive world rankings points.

LRLF CEO Remond Safi, who has just landed in Australia from Beirut to oversee and assist Michael Hedwan, LRLF Sydney operations manager, and continue the project to strengthen links between the considerable Lebanese-Australian rugby league community and the motherland.

Hedwan noted, “The link between the Lebanese Rugby League Federation and its Australian partners just gets bigger and stronger by the year. We are now building our team to prepare for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. This link is vital to support the operation in Lebanon as sponsors are easier to come by in Australia than in Lebanon.”

Fijian Rugby League welcomes legendary Petero Civoniceva in his first stint at coaching at senior level, where he will be assisting head coach Rick Stone.

Civoniceva said: “I am excited to be a part of the coaching staff for the Fijian team in our upcoming game versus Lebanon. I am looking forward to working with Rick Stone one last time. Rick has kindly offered to be the coach for this game before he starts his tenure at the Newcastle Knights.

“Stone has been a tremendous influence on all our Fijian rugby league players over the last few years, from a grassroots level to guiding us to last year’s Rugby League World Cup. The Fijian Rugby League will use this game as an opportunity to thank him for all his hard work and dedication, and wish him all the best as he starts his new appointment”.

Lebanon on the other hand have recently lost Josh Mansour and Robbie Farah to the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII on the eve of the Cedars’ first training session, while Tim Mannah is ruled out through duty of another kind – his honeymoon. The former New South Wales front row has been a regular at the Lebanese training camp.

The Parramatta star said: “It’s really great to see how well the Lebanese Rugby League Federation has been developing the game in Lebanon in tough conditions. It’s disappointing that I will be away for the Hayne Mannah Cup, but will be looking forward to playing in the World Cup qualifiers in 2015.”

The Cedars versus Fiji Bati will be the highlight of the day. The Hayne-Mannah Cup kicks off at 3pm, the U16s at 11am, and the U20s at 1pm. Gates open at 930am.

Is it Fiji Bati or Fiji-Australia? Surely if it is RLIF sanctionned and for ranking points it is Fiji Bati, but why all the talk of Fiji-Australia?

Any squad lists? Publicity or tv coverage in Fiji or Lebanon?

This game should really be played in Fiji! It doesn't achieve much playing it in cronulla. Better than nothing, but could be so much better!

FIVE local and 12 Australia based-players will represent the Vodafone Fiji Bati in its Test match against Lebanon on Sunday in Australia.

Fiji National Rugby League development officer Joe Rabele said it was a sanctioned international test match that would help Fiji remain in the fifth place on the world ranking should they win.

He said while Lebanon might be lowly ranked on 21 in the world, they could pose a huge threat.

"If they win, they will improve their rank," Rabele said.

"That is why it is so important for us to win this because we would need to keep our fifth ranking.

"We do not get to play as many international matches as the other nations," Rabele said.

Former Fiji Bati coach Rick Stone will coach the side while former Fiji Bati captain Petero Civoniceva will be his assistant.

Penrith Panthers player Wes Naiqama will captain the side while hooker Apisai Koroisau, who helped South Sydney Rabbitohs win their first NRL premiership title in 43 years, is also in the side.

Rabele said the other players were those who played in the New South Wales Cup competition or the NRL under-18 competition.

Would have been good to see a couple local Lebanese players come over for it, but I understand the logistics and the current civil situation in Lebanon.

As for Fiji, a great mix of Fiji based players and Australian pros. I don't see Api Korisau in the team, however.

No semi radradra, eto nabuli, marika korobete, sisa waqa, lote tuqiri, 3 sims brothers, Kevin naqaima, waqa Blake, Kane evens, Aquila uate.

Why are none of fijis best players playing? What is the point of all these nations picking second string squads?

You could ask the Aussies the same question.Perhaps the year after a WC should be the rest year.

Eto - just had his wedding and now on his honeymoon
Tariq - NSW/AUS
Semi is not available
Sisa Waqa just had surgery on an ankle that has been apparently dodgy since May
Waqa Blake - Junior Kangaroos....

Unsure for the rest... but doesn't hurt to give some residents a chance considering aiming to enter the NSW Cup in 2016

Not sure how they'd shoe horn 8 backs into the side. Thats 11 quality players there though.
Waqa Blake isn't in the Junior Roos now either do not sure what's up with him.

"Fiji will be boosted by late inclusions of NRL stars Api Koroisau (Rabbitohs) and Korbin Sims (Knights) for the Lebanon test. Fiji Head Coach Rick Stone was blown away by the desire of the two players to want to come back and play for Fiji with Sims coming into camp straight from a pre-planned Knights promo and with Koroisau's most recent NRL premiership success with the Rabbitohs. Officials are ecstatic about the added NRL involvement on the day and the affect it will have particularly on its youngsters in the test squad and in the curtain raisers being played on the day."

Australian Fijian Rugby League : "In a show of support to the current Fiji NSW Cup Bid the official logo for the bid will be worn on the sleeves of the Test team that will play against Lebanon on Sunday Oct 19. Should the bid be successful the AFRL will provide technical support for the team when (the are) based in NSW (for away games) and will also use Fiji's current training base the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence as its NSW base. Good luck to Chris Tomlinson, Greg Browne and Petero Civoniceva who are the driving force behind this initiative"
