Firman the next Lockyer: Fittler

http://www.nrl.com/news.cfm?ID=10314

15 December 2004

Sydney Roosters recruit Brett Firman will carry a heavy weight in 2005.

Not only is he the heir apparent to Brad Fittler's treasured No.6 jersey, he has also been compared by the man he succeeds with Brisbane's Test maestro Darren Lockyer.

The Roosters will be Firman's third club in the space of four seasons, two of which have been cut frustratingly short by injury.

The former Australian Schoolboys captain underwent a knee reconstruction at Cronulla in 2002 and missed almost the entire 2004 season with a broken leg after establishing himself as a potential superstar with St George Illawarra a year earlier.

Fittler sees Firman as the ideal candidate to take over at five-eighth, despite the claims of Queensland utility Chris Flannery and grand final halfback Brett Finch.

"I think Firman can be a bit like a Darren Lockyer," Fittler says in an interview in the official Rugby League Annual, which goes on sale at newsagents this Friday.

"I think he's got that in him. I hope he can because we've got so much to utilise out wide, speedwise."

The arrival of Amos Roberts (Penrith) and Joel Monaghan (Canberra) will give the Roosters one of the slickest backlines in the NRL.

They will complement the pace of established backline stars Anthony Minichiello, Ryan Cross and Chris Walker.

The 2004 Official Rugby League Annual is a must for every serious fan of the game and is on sale in newsagents from Friday 17 December, 2004. RRP: $16.95.

I'm getting a little worried about the emphasis on the speed of our backline. I remember a few years back all the fuss over the speed of Shane Whereat. Damn, he was fast. And boy could he play football?

(btw, the answer to that last question is 'NO')

I don't think we'll see "another" Lockyer.

He is in a class of his own, swicthed from Fullback to Five-Eighth with ease, played well and was voted in the top 5 players in 2004 even after missing eight matches.

Lockyer is the worlds best player, all this talk about Johns, he hasn't laced a boot in two years, you might as well say Wally Lewis is the best player.

Firman was a very good young prospect when he was with us at the Sharks, but he'll never amount to anything if he doesn't stay on the field. Both shoulders have been reconstructed and now his leg has to be a worry.

While he is unfortunately injury prone, if you can nurse him through a season he will be a potentially a very good player, however as for being the next Lockyer, sorry but he's no where near the "NEXT" Lockyer.

I personally reckon he would have been better off paired up with Freddy, but obviously that can't happen now. I can see him and Finch arguing over who calls the ball already, it could get very ugly.

even I admit it will be a hard act to become the next Lockyer - but here is hoping...

you must remeber this was Fittler who made this statement - I think he knows footballers - I also received information that Firman is training the house down. But as we know training and playing are two different things

so why have we dropped him?

imo, although his kicking game wasnt on, we still won both games he's played and the 3rd was disrupted with finch coming back.

i rekon finch should drop to PL, he's not ready yet and put firman back with wing... their passing game was better.

the kicks will come back with less pressure on them.

Ozzie in all fairness, lets leave our hate for one anothers clubs out of my next comment.

I know your not totally stupid. But Fitler came out with this comment for one reason and one reason only.

SO THEY DONT PUT THE TAG OF NEXT FITLER ON HIM.

Too much pressure for the guy.

You know that's why he said it, and everyone else here knows it as well.

I ave no hate for your club - just your bashing..but again leave that out.

I wrote that in January - as time has past now - Firman is sufferring from a new club syndrome.. he has to put up with not having a 5/8 outside him.

We are going to struggle until we have a half decent one and the answer could be Flannery..wished they play him there

no just his football ability...since when did you pay money for intelligence? - if they did Mason and a lot of others would have to pay their club to play

I was just putting his comments in context - great player, but who really cares what he thinks - although, as you point out I'd pay more attention to Freddy than Willie
