strider......
your welcome to your opinion, but can you honestly tell me why you still support Brian Smith
do you have ANY valid reasons at all????
We have some quality players coming on board next season, aquired by Smith, who I think are just what the team needs....provided they all stay fit - Riddell will be an inspiration for us, Morrison is the perfect Hindy partner, Stringer could be one of those buys of the year and Tahu is just what we need in hte backline.....yes I know we need a playmaker, but Orford chose to stay with Melbourne.
I don't believe these type of quality players have really been available in prior seasons.....plus we have infact picked up some very handy players since 2001 - Dykes, Morris, Cannings....while we haven't seen the best from them for various reasons, they were justifiable pickups at the time.
I know we have lost lots of players who have kicked on at other clubs, but I can see valid reasons why they left/weren't chased harder to be retained.
As for possibly losing Dykes - I know he is our best half "when he is at his best", but I believe we have had as much success without him as with him.
We desperately need a half who can play a role for us - if not control the whole game, then just provide a solid kicking game.....someone has to step up.
I believe Smithy has built a team which should be good enough to be competative - I wouldn't expect a premiership, but being competative with the top teams would be a good 2005.
I believe Brian Smith cares a HELL OF ALOT MORE about or woes than you give him credit for....I believe he is actually trying too hard to right the ship - I think he is picking who he sees as the best team each week, even if that means changes - I believe he needs to try to stick with a set combination from the outset next year.....if players have a shocker, then so be it, they forget it and get on with next week.
And now to the dreaded INJURIES....you can all bag the living sh*t out of me if you like, but these are the MAIN reason for our bad 3 year period....we have not been able to keep our best players on the field together for long periods like we did in 2001, like Penrith did last year, like the Bulldogs are doing this year.....we have been prevented from getting any combinations going because players aren't getting used to playing with eachother....there is no trust and no confidence in your teammates.
So I guess my main point is that I am not convinced it is all Brian Smith's faults....yes I believe he makes mistakes - everyone does....he is under a shitload of pressure at the moment and I think he is trying too hard to sort things out.....I believe with a bit of luck next season we can get things back on track regardless of who is coaching us.
