Flame proof Smith can stay thread

I still support Smith as well, BUT

I need an ultimatum such as I need to know his minimum expectation of where we will be by say round 10 next season, and if he cannot meet his own ultimatum then I think he needs to consider his friends (Players, officials and the like) and do the right thing by them.

Like many I am losing faith and I need a quantum. Something that can be measured, not form or here say!!

Playing Thorman on Saturday rocked my world! The only possible reason that I can put it down to is Salary Cap!!

your welcome to your opinion, but can you honestly tell me why you still support Brian Smith

do you have ANY valid reasons at all????

We have some quality players coming on board next season, aquired by Smith, who I think are just what the team needs....provided they all stay fit - Riddell will be an inspiration for us, Morrison is the perfect Hindy partner, Stringer could be one of those buys of the year and Tahu is just what we need in hte backline.....yes I know we need a playmaker, but Orford chose to stay with Melbourne.

I don't believe these type of quality players have really been available in prior seasons.....plus we have infact picked up some very handy players since 2001 - Dykes, Morris, Cannings....while we haven't seen the best from them for various reasons, they were justifiable pickups at the time.

I know we have lost lots of players who have kicked on at other clubs, but I can see valid reasons why they left/weren't chased harder to be retained.

As for possibly losing Dykes - I know he is our best half "when he is at his best", but I believe we have had as much success without him as with him.

We desperately need a half who can play a role for us - if not control the whole game, then just provide a solid kicking game.....someone has to step up.

I believe Smithy has built a team which should be good enough to be competative - I wouldn't expect a premiership, but being competative with the top teams would be a good 2005.

I believe Brian Smith cares a HELL OF ALOT MORE about or woes than you give him credit for....I believe he is actually trying too hard to right the ship - I think he is picking who he sees as the best team each week, even if that means changes - I believe he needs to try to stick with a set combination from the outset next year.....if players have a shocker, then so be it, they forget it and get on with next week.

And now to the dreaded INJURIES....you can all bag the living shit out of me if you like, but these are the MAIN reason for our bad 3 year period....we have not been able to keep our best players on the field together for long periods like we did in 2001, like Penrith did last year, like the Bulldogs are doing this year.....we have been prevented from getting any combinations going because players aren't getting used to playing with eachother....there is no trust and no confidence in your teammates.

So I guess my main point is that I am not convinced it is all Brian Smith's faults....yes I believe he makes mistakes - everyone does....he is under a shitload of pressure at the moment and I think he is trying too hard to sort things out.....I believe with a bit of luck next season we can get things back on track regardless of who is coaching us.

I'll also add a bit about some of our players....and I'll use that magical word so many on here just love so much.....MEDIOCRITY

Yes, I believe with all our injuries we have been left with alot of mediocre players....there are guys out there you have to admire for putting their best effort in, but at the end of the day many aren't stars and never will be.....guys like Langi, Ash has been way down on last season, Tsoulos is still very inexperienced, Peek can have the odd good game but is just a worker, Burt has been way down on form, Witt and Thorman are in no way top players....I am not bagging these guys - they are doing their best out there every chance they get....but at the end of the day they are nothing more than mediocre most of the time.

ive given up on supporting smith it looks like after 2001 our club was going in wrong direction and still is...

with his buying big players at end of last season to playing 1 playmaker a match his decisions are just horrible we need to be headed in a entirely different direction...

you can see how bad we are going now with our junior teams sucking no one wants to play for the eels anymore we had all the best juniors...

Great posts Strider I understand where you're coming from. I do agree that Smith cares and is hurting as much, probably more than the fans right now.
While Smith is still our coach, I'll still hold out hope that he can bring us back.

I'd love to see Smith go out with a Grand final victory over Brisbane. Because for whatever reason Bronco Supporters hate Brian Smith and Parra, it would be a great way to really stick it to the arrogant bronco supporters and have the last laugh.

I really, really hope you are right Strides, and not just to get rid of Brian.
It's the success I crave.

I don't think reasonable person would accuse Brian Smith of "not caring" or "wanting us to lose" or anything ridiculous like that. The only issue here is that after 8 years, he's gotten stale at Parra. He needs a change of scene and the club needs a new face at the helm.

The only coach to have stayed longer at a club is Wayne Bennett and he's been forced to reinvent himself and his team's playing style a number of times. That's something Brian has not been able to do.

Well said WA Eel. You have put everything pretty much how it is, so I have no more to add.
