Newcastle closed the door on an emotional week for the club when they disposed of the South Sydney side in round five Jersey Flegg action at Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights came away victors 24-6 after leading 12-0 at halftime. They continued their productive start to the season, losing just one game from the opening five rounds and remaining in the top four. In an unseasonably hot day, ball handling from both sides was of a high standard. The first half did not reach any great highs as attack took a back seat and bruising defence came to the fore. Tries to Beau Simpson and Brodie Hartman combined with halfback Joel Brown’s two successful conversions had the Knights in command at the halftime break.
Tries in the second half, both to Knights halfback Brown along with his four goals from as many attempts gave the young halfback a personal points haul of 16 points. Brown directed the team around well, but his kicking game at times let him down. The Rabbitohs scored a consolation try five minutes from fulltime when prop forward Sione Tovo crashed over under the posts. Centre Steve Coleman added the extras to give the final score of Newcastle 24 South Sydney 6.
For the Knights, lock forward Brodie Hartman was unspectacular, but solid in defence. The Knights’ Joel Edwards also came up with some big hits, one which left the Souths five-eight requiring medical assistance with suspected broken ribs.
After the very successful 2006 Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg side, the 2007 side has potential to also go very deep into the season.
