Roy Masters suggests in this article that the ARU have topped up Folau's contract by $400K. How he came to this figure is anyone's guess. But it seems a certainty that the Tahs $250K has been topped up by the ARU.
Amongst some other general crap about Folau "losing skills" and bulk, Masters makes the observation that the ARU have tagged him as a 7's player.
This could be the most significant point in the article and in Folau's value and his decision to sign up to play rugby.
He has potential to be a Commonwealth games medallist in 2014 and an Olympian and potential medallist in 2016.
Why would the ARU pay so much for Folau as a 15's player. There is no need and while the Tahs will generate some additional interest to see how he goes there is no guarantee that he would make the Wallabies.
But consider 7's and the place in the Commonwealth and Olympic teams and it makes some sense.
It will be interesting to watch and see how he goes and how many players make the effort to start playing 7's again. Will the various national/ international bodies make space for players to be both 15's/7's players?
