The St George Illawarra Dragons have announced several key structural and personnel changes following the completion of the club's annual football department review.

A review of the Dragons' football department is commonplace at the completion of every NRL season. This year's review took on additional implications to ensure the club's unacceptable 15th place finish in 2019 wouldn't be repeated moving forward.

All aspects of the Dragons' football department were examined throughout this comprehensive internal and external review process. Experienced rugby league administrator and coach Phil Gould was involved with the review as an external consultant.

Dragons CEO Brian Johnston welcomed the conclusion of the extensive review and the consequential changes that have followed.

"Everyone at the Dragons were terribly dissatisfied with the club's 2019 season campaign which resulted in this wide-ranging internal and external review of the club's football department," Johnston said.

"The Dragons have made key structural changes to its coaching, performance and medical staff following the determination of a lack of experience within the wider group. This includes several new staff appointments to the football department.

"It was noted throughout the review that there needed to be a greater focus on club culture and leadership. In acknowledging this, the club have taken steps in this space in order to bring further accountability and discipline to the playing group.

"The Dragons are also in the process of renovating its facilities at WIN Stadium. This is for the benefit of not only the players but the staff situated in Wollongong as well.

"All of our stakeholders, including our partners, members and supporters can rest assured that the Dragons have not taken this process lightly and look forward to greater success in our upcoming campaign and beyond."

Former premiership-winning Sharks and Knights assistant coach James Shepherd will join Paul McGregor's coaching staff in 2020 following Ben Hornby's departure. One vacancy remains on the coaching staff. The Dragons are taking due diligence with this process and will finalise this appointment at a later date.

Adrian Jimenez will join the Dragons in 2020 as the NRL strength and conditioning coach from the Parramatta Eels. Jimenez previously spent 11 seasons with the Melbourne Storm and has also worked at the Penrith Panthers and with the New Zealand Test team.

Steve Dean has been promoted to lead NRL physiotherapist while former Sharks junior representative physio Davis Theobald will join the club as the rehab physiotherapist. New South Wales State of Origin head physiotherapist Dan Lawson will also re-join the Dragons on a part-time basis.

The Dragons have engaged Gerard Murphy of Leadership by Design to aid a clearer focus in the culture and leadership space. Murphy has worked in performance and team dynamics over the past two decades with AFL clubs Geelong, Richmond and Port Adelaide, both England rugby league and rugby union Test teams, the Great Britain Olympic team and English Premier League's West Ham United. Murphy's experience extends to the corporate world having previously worked with Caterpillar, Rip Curl, Nissan, Deloitte and Bunnings.

Further to this, mind and performance coach Matt Griggs – a former professional surfer who has worked alongside surfing world champions Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore – will facilitate lessons on meditation, among other things.

In confirming the Dragons' fresh approach ahead of 2020, the club have upgraded its Wollongong office facilities, with renovations and enhancements to the NRL change room and gym also underway.

The Dragons have currently signed 24 players in their Top 30 ahead of the 2020 Telstra Premiership season, the minimum quota required by November 1. The club remains in negotiations with a number of players for the final six spots within the squad. The Dragons are also close to finalising its development player squad.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor has endorsed the findings and outcomes of the football department review and is optimistic of a brighter 2020 season.

"Our performances throughout the 2019 season were not demonstrative of this proud club, given also the successful season we produced 12 months prior," McGregor said.

"There are plenty of positives that have come from the review. We accept we didn't play to our potential as a team last season. The review has also provided everyone involved a chance to reflect and learn from the hardships of 2019.

"The amount of change implemented across the football department hasn't occurred for a very long time and will provide a positive new approach to the 2020 season.

"I look forward to overseeing a collective rejuvenation of our on-field structures; this will be indicative of the football department changes as well as further involvement from the playing group."

The Dragons will commence pre-season training ahead of the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership season next week.

As usual supporters are drip fed information and the full story at a later date. The main problem still exists but hopefully that is gone after 6 games next year !

I do not understand how this flog considers a fading 7th a successful season... Illawarra mediocrity at its finest

Words are cheap. We will see as the season goes by.Same old same old will happen whilst the coach remains.
He has shown over many years he just does not learn from past errors of judgement.

    What a load of shit.

Only fresh approach would be to remove current head Coach.

We have zero new signings for next season. Common denominator = McGregor.

Unfortunately Paul McGregor is going to be remembered as a disappointment of a head coach rather than a fantastic world class centre.

Laughable. My points taken out of this.

Johnno - 15th unacceptable and ensuring we wont finish there again. So 14th is a step forward?
Funny how (throw him under the bus) Ben Hornby is the only person they have mentioned departed. News to us when was that announced?....and so many other positions replaced.
What are the other names of the people let go?...dont worry Dragons...we will work it out.

Coaches - they are only filling only 2 positions. Last year mary Head. Assistants Crawley, Hornby Young & Head
Young and Mary were not part of the problem. This year Shepherd and cant mention the name yet S.... F........ Is Head staying? or Crawley's position proved a waste of time.

How i knew the facilities + the offices? again and performance, physios and conditioning were going to cop the full brunt of what was wrong and needed an overhaul after 2-3 years.
And now we need more physco babbling employees to improve and define our culture, leadership and DNA. Yep...our coach and board cant work it out.

and great news a fellow Forum Member The Calm One is joining the staff. That time in the forest done you good.
We now know his real name is Matt Griggs. Expect some inside info now about who is coming here.

Players - more accountable for discipline...HAHA. Knew it was not Mary's fault. it was JDB's and the shot at our captains and senior playing group for letting the season get out of hand

Mary enough said - OPINOF. Our past is not our future but you keep referring to how successful your go to year forever 2018 85 mins from a GF was? (was it?.. 8 wins out of your last 17 games games going from 1st to...7th)..hmmm

And we are supposed to be excited about 2020....not me unless we sign some marquee players!

The two people who are coaches are still here that's the problem.
Is it going to make a difference if the physio and all the others are changed.
    NO NO NO NO NO.

So, the review finds that the psyche of the Dragons was a major factor in finishing 15th.

    Solution:
    1. refurbish the change room and gym, give it a fresh new look so the players feel more comfortable.
    2. At the same time lets refurbish some offices too so our 'management' don't feel left out and therefore can make better decisions.
    3. Hire a former surfer who is an 'expert' in meditation. Why do I get a mental picture of bonfires on the beach and that unmistakable aroma of a certain tabacco? Yeah man!!
    4. 7th is an acceptable target finish. Can't aim too high as this may cause undue stress on players.
    5. We are 'optimistic of a "brighter" 2020'. WTF does that mean?
    6. Physiotherapy is now the new scapegoat.
    7. Due Diligence = SF
    8. Mc85mins - "I look forward to a rejuvenation of our on-field structures" teanslated as "i have ran the same 'power play' for 5yrs and i guess it didnt work hey"
    9. If you take a read of the Illawarra Mercury it states thwre that Pickworth has 'left the club' and replaced by Adrian Jiminez.
    10. We remain in negotiations with a number of players - lol

Those are my top 10 take aways from this fluff piece. Sigh!

Gus was involved with the review as an 'external consultant'. Not that I expect to ever know, but what exactly were his recommendations?

Again, we have another round of sackings & new appointments within the coaching, medical, support & backroom staff with the formalities around Flannos' appointment still to be finalsed. But once again, McGregor and Millward seemingly escape any 'microscope level' scrutiny for their short-comings as both head coach and head of recruitment.

We can't keep hiring and firing assistants. Surely this has to be last straw in this respect? You can't tell me these constant changes/movements aren't disruptive to the playing group i.e. players rehabbing from niggles they picked up during last season or having off season surgery, to then have to come back and work with new faces in the medical team. As head coach - McGregor has simply not assumed enough responsibility for the overall performance of the team and his support staff.

We are loaded with too many reserve grade level outside backs in our roster and this lies squarely at the feet of Ian Millward. This same problem identified prior to pre-season 2019 is still in existence today... a few days out from pre-season 2020 commencing. Doesn't seem like they have any great or 'outside the box' plans to fill those remaining six spots in our top 30 either.

My only hope is that Shane Flannagan does come in and wield some influence in the organisation from the top to the bottom. Otherwise 2020 is going to be just as, if not more, painful as 2019.

This “All of our stakeholders, including our partners, members and supporters can rest assured that the Dragons have not taken this process lightly”

If the process wasn’t taken lightly...why is that imposter McUseless still there? This club does my head in

Why can't they just let McDeflector paint the gym and change rooms, then piss him off. Bring in a new colour.....Brown (Nathan) to start the rebuild of the mess left until Flanno is ready to resume Head role in 2 years.
There's an awful lot of bullshit dished up to mask the main problem......the dickheads that put the peanut in charge.
