name your st george team of the 70's & your st george team of the 80's.

willow & pat can name their team of the 20's

your team must be best players, not your favourites!

Johnsy, you might have your fullback mixed up. Brian Johnson was a fullback while Brian Johnstone was a centre/winger.

a couple of good teams johnsy, the 70s side looks awesome,
80s not bad either, although i would have beattie in the centre's, didn't think rogers did enough for us,and would have walford on the wing.

guys, you'll find Steve Morris initially played as a halfback when he first started in 1979. He was moved to the wing in the early 80's.

Remember it like it was yesterday.

I reckon this team would teach the kiddies of today a lesson or two...

1. Fullback: Lyall Wall
2. Winger: George 'Bluey' Carstairs
3. Centre: Herb Gilbert Snr (vice captain)
4. Centre: Reg Fusedale
5. Winger: Fred 'Yappy' Gardner
6. Five eighth: Arnold Traynor
7. Half back: Albert 'Rickety' Johnston
8. Lock forward: Frank 'Chunky' Burge (captain-coach)
9. Second row: Aubrey 'Jockey' Kelly
10. Second row: Ernie 'Curly' Lapham
11. Prop forward: Bill Hardman
12. Hooker: Arthur 'Snowy' Justice
13. Prop forward: Clarrie Tye

Reserves:
14. Percy Fairall (back rower, hooker)
15. Harry Flower (front rower)

All I can add is that when I was a kid in an all St George household in the 70's, my favourite player was a winger called Michael Soridimi (sp?)... perhaps the first 'Mediterranean Descendant' to play!

But I can even recall my Dragons supporting father thinking that I was an idiot to be a fan of the flying Soridimi.

Was he really that bad??

Fair call, I just had to have steve in the side, what a centre combination. Walnut was unlucky not to get a run as I had to have Beattie in the side, walnut's on the bench, un-named bench that is.

Kinchela, sorridimi etc they are all on the extended bench.

80s
Fullback: Johnson
Wing: Walford, Sorridimi
Centre: O'Connor, Beattie
Halves: Morris, Haddock
Lock: Reddy
2nd row: Fullerton-Smith, Wynn
Props: Young, Jarvis
Hooker: Dowling

The 80s weren't great for halves, but I have more bad memories of Linnane's games than good. Also had to have a place for Mick Sorridimi - can smell the Scanlon's footy card chewy now!

Saints toured NZ and Soridimi was voted the "best" league player - very clever skillful player - great in Reserve Grade but stifled when made to conform in First. Had a coffee shop (blue ?) at Miranda Fair until recently.
