I understand what you mean about not burning him out. I agree with that. He will be making a lot of tackles in the middle third, whether he is at prop or at lock. If he plays lock then I think he should decrease his hit ups a little in the middle third, but drawing in defenders and using his passing game. In attack, especially when attacking the try line, he would sometimes play a bit wider, like a second rower, targeting some weaker defenders. So he wouldn't necessarily do more work at lock. The only reason I would want Sam at prop is if we have some props out injured and there aren't enough good props available for us to make good metres up the middle third. This has been the case at times this year, so I can see why Madge is doing it. When the team is at full strength, I am fairly confident that Madge will have Sam back at lock.
