Forget the hype, the real test starts next year

Nothing but increased ratings, greater playing numbers, games on FTA TV and a national comp will prove that, the world cup has had any sort of impact on Union in Australia.

It's all very well beating your chest while the event is on, the real test is achieving something afterwards.

Ratings have, overall, been poor, although the Australian public has really got in behind the cup in attending the games. The big question is, can they woo these people along to S12 games and club games? That's going to be extremely hard, given most of these people are League, soccer and AFL fans.

So, while the ARU are no doubt enjoying all the publicity while no other sports are on, lets just see how the code fronts up next year when all and sundry will be watching very, very closely.

Auck Mel,

Some of your points are quite valid. The ARU must build on the succes of the RWC, but it is unlikely that the results will be obvious to the outsider or casual observer in the next 12 to 24 mths. The grass roots are where the gains will be made initially and the flow on will be increased public support and greater player numbers and then increased TV coverage. By 2007 the Wallabies will depart for France and the RWC with the support of a nation behind it's major football code. Can't wait.

Major football code  League is twice as big as union currently is, and afl is even bigger (though I hate to admit it).

Keep dreaming sunshine.

Balmain Boy,
You state LEAGUE IS twice as big as RUGBY. Please show stats that support your opinion for the position of the codes in 2007....the year I was referring too. :) ;-) :D

I think you will find Mango that at Grass roots level Balmain boy is probably being very conservative. League is probably more than 5 times as big in terms of playing numbers, people involved , sponsorship etc.3

Rugby has a long way to go mate. Internationally the game is great but other than that in Australia it is well behind the AFL and League

Crowd numbers through the gate to NRL matches 2.7 million & about half a million to all RU Super 12 matches & test matches this year (ignore RUWC).

What about TV viewing nimbers for the NRL & Super 12 - I know the Super 12 was nil for the last half of their season.

I dont know how you got 2.7m to all NRL games when the average crowd was only 15,000 and we will say 40,000 to the finals that is only about 600,000 for the season. ?

The average Super 12 game pulled in about 24,000 (Counting all S12 games) and 45,000 for internationals. Considering that S12 is only half the length and there was only 4 home internationals before the world cup!

NRL in Aus walks all over the union games when it comes to TV ratings.

bayrep,

There are 182 domestic games per season (26 rounds x 7 games)

182 x 15000 = 2,730,000

2,730,000 + 300000 (approx. finals crowds) = 3,030,000

If we add three SOO's to that we have 3,030,000 + 180000 = 3,210,000

2.7m was a conservative figure. I don't know where you got 600,000 from

Just look at the papers just days after the World Cup.

Life goes on, the world cup is already fading in our memories.

Bring on the summer sports!

BTW, the world cup benefitted greatly from the other codes having finished their seasons - no competition!!! Widespread media attention!!

Try doing the next one during the AFL and NRL seasons and watch everything but the main games get buried!

I would think that is because there is nothing to report on since the event is over. There is next nothing in the NZ papers we have moved on to cricket, basket ball etc.

balmain Boy could not support his ridiculous claim. Another absurd Mungo claim of superiority bites the dust. RUGBY RULES.

Roosterphin is obviously even more deluded. Mungoes have more than five times the players that real rugby have, I'd like to see that! :D :D :D :D Post the stats u dummy. I know the figures, I just want to see a Mungo eat shit. :D     I guess we won't hear from dummy again.

Why don't you post some statistics that support your claims that union will be the number 1 code in Australia by 2007.

I don't see too much written up about union in the papers at the moment, but already league is taking up more and more space for next season.

I don't think it will have a huge effect. Already people have started to forget about it, how much interest will there be when S12 starts next year (with games only on Fox)? Not much.
