old man
probably just the fact that he is a leader in the team and when playing well and cocnsistently at "lock" he is an asset to the team in terms of his:
defence (quantity and quality)
80 minute player (less interchanges)
leadership (as mentioned)
passion and commitment to the team
attacking ability (when he chooses to have input in attack rather than being forced to provide it at 5/8)
i just think we need Wags there in #13, particularly at the start of the year and i also think that he is there for the 80 minutes contributing evenly throught the contest rather than him coming on as an impact player (which he is probably not best at)
also, having him start means less interchanges as he can play 80 minutes, which is good as we will need a back up hooker and interchange player for Riddell as well as for the 2 props that will be interchanged as well all game????
I agree that Wagon is not best at being an impact player (in fact you might say he would be downright awful in such a role!)
But I don't see how his defence is any better than Morrison
Morrison plays 80 minutes
Morrison exudes leadership
Morrison is passionate about winning
Morrison's attacking ability from lock is AT LEAST the equal of Wagon's - I doubt many would argue that Morrison is a better attacker
So with Morrison starting at lock and playing 80, and with Hindmarsh starting in the second row and playing 80, and with Widders coming off the bench as a back-row strike weapon, then we only need a second rower to start - and I think Cayless is certainly more qualified to do that than Wagon -- I certainly wouldn't want Morrison playing 50 minutes (limiting his effectiveness).
So with Widders, 2 props to be interchanged and a hooker (PJ) then we have our bench... no Wags... so sad, too bad!
