Combination broken as Stanmore makes last pass

By Roy Masters
June 30, 2005

One half of one of rugby league's greatest halves combinations has gone to the Great Scorekeeper.

Western Suburbs' former five-eighth Frank Stanmore, who played outside legendary halfback Keith Holman, has died aged 75.

The Magpie partnership played from 1948-53, during which time the club won two premierships (1948, 1952) and Australia regained the Ashes (1950).

It was the Holman-Stanmore pairing which initiated a right-hand side passing movement, allowing Ron Roberts to score in the corner on a treacherously muddy day at the SCG for a 5-2 victory over Great Britain.

The mercurial Stanmore, who died yesterday morning from a heart attack related to a breathing disorder, played 80 games for Wests, eight times for NSW and represented Australia in 10 Tests.

On the 1952 Kangaroo tour, he captained Australia seven times for seven wins.

The Magpies, saddened by the recent deaths of some of their heroes, organised a tribute for Stanmore. Their timing proved as good as Frankie's passes, with the May 21 dinner at the Ashfield club gathering together his family and his estranged wife, Janet.

Frankie is survived by Janet, twin daughters Diane and Cheryl and his son, Warren, at whose Wangi home he died.

The funeral is on Monday.

One of our best apparently, before my time but his name just keeps getting mentioned when the greats are mentioned.
